Job Summary:

Assist pharmacist in preparing prescriptions and medication orders. Process, prepare, scan, fill and label medication, make many nontechnical judgmental decisions, pre-pack medications for dispensing and maintain daily logs. Service and stock robotics and automated dispensing cabinets, reconstitute and compound oral medication, dispense medication to patients, mail medication, electronically requests refills from providers, return medications to stock, and call patients. Maintain clean and orderly workstations, equipment, and medication preparation areas. Greets patients and provides exceptional customer service in person, while answering the phone and in the drive-thru. May review electronic health records as appropriate for patient care. Serve as an interdepartmental liaison and pharmacy and patient advocate.


Tahlequah campus technicians only: Complete inpatient training. Complete extensive education in sterile compounding following USP cleanroom guidelines for IV, IM, subcutaneous and epidural preparation. Perform biannual finger-tip and media fill testing, perform terminal cleanroom cleaning, appropriately garb, aseptically stock the sterile compounding cleanroom, and abide by policies and procedures to utilize sterile compounding hoods.

Job Duties:

Routine duties shall include providing health care services to individuals eligible for services in accordance with the self-governance compact and funding agreement between the Cherokee Nation and the United States executed under the authority of the Indian Self-Determination and Education Assistance Act. Participate in departmental performance improvement and quality management initiatives. Participate in accreditation readiness and preparation. Complete required annual education. Fill and label medication correctly, answer phones and assist patients in the drive-thru. Compile and transmit daily medication orders and prepare off-schedule orders. Prepack and maintain adequate supplies of prepackaged medications. Address and review expired medication reports and act accordingly removing the expired products from active stocks. Perform narcotic audit per policy. Mix and compound oral and IV preparations as prescribed and label. Research appropriate dilution, reconstitution, and stability. Assist pharmacist in preparing and dispensing medication. Order, receive, and stock incoming medication/supplies in the appropriate location. Maintain files and appropriate logs and documentation according to policies and procedures. Set up, monitor, and maintain cactus/waste disposal unit. Interact with patients and staff in a friendly, respectful manner. Adhere to professional ethical standards and follow HR policies and procedures. Other duties may be assigned.


Tahlequah campus technicians only:

Send and receive medications via the tube system, troubleshoot problems with automated dispensing cabinets, and contact the appropriate servicing company to resolve issues.


SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

No supervisory responsibility.

Qualifications:

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENT

High school diploma or general education degree (GED); no exceptions.


EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT

No additional experience required.


COMPUTER SKILLS

An individual should know Database software; Inventory software; Order processing systems; spreadsheet software, and Word Processing software.


CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

Must possess Basic Life Support (BLS) and maintain throughout employment. Can be obtained during orientation. Must be able to obtain a Pharmacy Technician Permit within 60 days of employment as a Pharmacy Technician as specified by the Oklahoma State Board of Pharmacy.


OTHER QUALIFICATIONS

The employee must not be and will not be under sanction by the United States Department of Health and Human Services Office of the Inspector General (OIG) or by the General Services Administration (GSA) or listed on the OIG's Cumulative Sanction Report, or the GSA's List of Excluded Providers, or listed on the OIG's List of Excluded Individuals/Entities (LEIE). Must have a working knowledge of computers.


PHYSICAL DEMANDS

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, use hands, talk, and hear. The employee is frequently required to walk and sit. The employee is occasionally required to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally move more than 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and the ability to adjust focus.


WORK ENVIRONMENT

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles, and toxic or caustic chemicals. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, outside weather conditions, extreme cold, and extreme heat. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
