The Piping Takeoff Estimator is a vital member of Polk Mechanical’s pre-construction team, collaborating closely with fellow estimators and virtual design professionals to ensure every project is positioned for success from the outset. Leveraging deep industry experience, this role goes beyond estimating material and labor costs—it involves proactively identifying and resolving discrepancies in engineering plans within the mechanical/HVAC piping scope.
Job Conditions:
- This position is office-based with occasional site visits.
- Schedule flexibility required; extended hours may be necessary to meet project deadlines.
- Frequent interaction with internal pre-construction and project management teams, as well as external general contractors and engineering firms.
- Tools & Software used are Bluebeam, Bluebeam Revu, FastEST (FastPIPE & FastDUCT), Microsoft Excel, PDF editing tools.
Responsibilities:
- Analyze project plans and specifications to fully understand the scope of work.
- Identify and resolve missing components, code compliance issues, and cross-trade conflicts in incomplete or flawed drawings.
- Apply technical expertise to correct and complete mechanical/HVAC piping plans.
- Generate and verify detailed takeoff reports, including revised drawings.
- Track and incorporate all addenda, scope changes, and breakouts promptly.
- Clearly communicate and justify estimates to both internal teams and external stakeholders.
Qualifications:
- High School Diploma or GED required.
- Minimum 4+ years in mechanical construction (Plumbing, Piping, HVAC) in roles such as tradesman, installer, supervisor, or superintendent.
- Proficient in reading and interpreting plumbing, piping, architectural, structural, and civil blueprints.
- Strong understanding of piping fixtures, equipment connections, and mechanical/HVAC piping systems (e.g., chilled water, steam, condensate, natural gas, medical gas).
- Familiarity with local mechanical/HVAC codes and ADA standards.
- Competency in estimating software, PDF editing, Excel, and digital file management.
- Degree or coursework in Construction Management or Engineering (Preferred)
- Prior experience in estimating or pre-construction roles (Preferred)
- Supervisory or superintendent experience in the construction industry (Preferred)
