Job Description: Cobio Diagnostics seeks a highly qualified and self-directed Research Scientist to support activities in our bacteriophage and biotechnology-focused laboratory. Cobio specializes in medical diagnostic products for use in clinical settings. The successful candidate will 1) have experience in a BSL2 microbiology laboratory and with immunoassays, 2) be willing to learn new techniques under the direction of Cobio’s Laboratory Manager, 3) be able to work independently after training, and 4) be well organized and able to adhere to established operating procedures and protocols. It is mandatory that the candidate have excellent attention to detail and demonstrate meticulous laboratory technique. Prior experience with bacteriophage isolation and propagation a plus.
As a small company, Cobio requires employees to possess a high level of flexibility. The Research Scientist, along with the rest of Cobio’s employees, can be asked to complete a variety of jobs at any time. This job description is therefore general in nature and is not a complete list of all duties that the Research Scientist could be asked to perform. The position will be onsite at Cobio’s laboratory in the Fitzsimons Innovation Community located on the University of Colorado Anschutz campus in Aurora, CO. This position is full time, Monday through Friday, and employees are expected to work at least 40 hours per week. The successful candidate will report to the Laboratory Manager.
Specific responsibilities of the position include:
1. Performing BSL2 tasks such as:
- Growing and manipulating pathogenic bacterial cultures
- Producing, purifying and quantifying bacteriophage (phage)
- Working with wastewater, environmental, and clinical specimens
2. Laboratory operations including ordering materials and supplies.
3. Receiving and inventorying samples and clinical specimens.
4. Bacterial, viral, and specimen archival preservation activities.
5. Shipping samples to vendors and other consultants, as directed.
6. Other conventional laboratory tasks such as learning and operating sequencer, HPLC, MALDI-TOF, MS, etc.
7. General laboratory tasks such as media, reagent, and chemical preparation.
8. Maintaining cleanliness and function of the laboratory.
9. Documenting laboratory activities and preparing reports/presentations pertaining to research and development work.
Minimum Qualifications:
- BS degree; Microbiology, Immunology, or related discipline
- 4+ years of post-university work in biotechnology, research and development, or related field
- At least one year of prior experience related to bacteriophage manipulation, sequencing, MALDI-TOF, and/or genetic engineering
- A demonstrated willingness to learn and to work cooperatively within time constraints
- Flexibility with job responsibilities
- Reliable and honest

Compensation: The position is supported by a National Science Foundation grant. Compensation is commensurate with experience and is highly competitive in the Denver, CO market and within the range of $65,000-$80,000 per year. Cobio Diagnostics currently provides the following workplace benefits:
