Occupational Health and Safety Specialist 1 (OHSS1)
Permanent · Full-time · In- Person

The Washington State Department of Health (DOH) works to protect and improve the health of all people in Washington. Within this mission, our Security Program Specialist plays a critical role in ensuring the safety and functionality of our facilities across the state.

This position is part of the Building Management Section within the Office of Facilities (OF), which supports DOH staff through facilities management, physical security, building operations, workplace modernization, asset management, and more. You’ll manage the daily security operations and special security tasks at all DOH campuses and collaborate with colleagues across Tumwater, Shoreline, Richland, Spokane, and Lacey.

As an Occupational Health and Safety Specialist 1 (OHSS), you will:
  • Lead daily security operations and respond to safety incidents across all DOH campuses.
  • Serve as the point of contact for security contractors and coordinate special security projects.
  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders to assess and enhance physical security infrastructure.
  • Support emergency response efforts and ensure business continuity from a facility security perspective.
  • Assist in developing policies and procedures for secure facility operations and incident response.

Location and Flexibility:
Join our onsite team to collaborate directly with colleagues and be part of our dynamic workplace environment. This position requires working onsite and in person at our Tumwater campus.

:

Option 1:
Three (3) or more years of experience in the following:

  • Experience in providing law enforcement, building access or security services, that includes operating restricted entry systems (e.g., HID card readers) and using de-escalation techniques to ensure safety.
  • Communicating both written and oral, including conflict resolution, promoting safety, providing technical assistance or consultation regarding security, responding to inquiries about policies, procedures, and services.
  • Experience will include practical skills in using workflow management systems for assigned work, MS Excel for spreadsheet tasks, MS Word for document creation and formatting, and Microsoft Outlook or similar email systems for electronic correspondence.


Option 2
: Associate degree (or higher) in law, criminal justice, public safety, security, or a related field. One (1) or more years of experience in all of the following:

  • Experience in providing law enforcement, building access or security services, that includes operating restricted entry systems (e.g., HID card readers) and using de-escalation techniques to ensure safety.
  • Communication experience both written and oral, to provide conflict resolution, promote safety, technical assistance or consultation regarding security, and responding to inquiries about policies, procedures, or services.
  • Experience will include practical skills in using workflow management systems for assigned work, MS Excel for spreadsheet tasks, MS Word for document creation and formatting, and Microsoft Outlook or similar email systems for electronic correspondence.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience coordinating with vendors and frontline staff to ensure proper coverage, resource availability, and daily operational support.
  • Experience providing security training to staff to explain technical information to diverse audiences with different levels of understanding.
  • Project support experience that includes managing tasks, directing others, and reporting progress to project managers.
  • One (1) or more years utilizing access control systems and their functions to include creating access profiles for multiple facility locations.
  • Experience troubleshooting access outages and diagnosing potential system failures.
  • Utilizing CMMS (Computerized maintenance management software)
  • Familiarity with Genetec, Siemen’s, Johnson Controls, visitor access systems OR similar.
