Summary
The Social Media Manager supports the development and implementation of Michigan Tech’s social media strategy. This includes managing the University’s main social media accounts (Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, and X), helping to develop content tailored to each platform, and identifying digital and social media trends that provide opportunities for the University. We seek a highly motivated brand champion who is passionate about content marketing and can adeptly leverage multiple platforms to share Michigan Tech’s dynamic, multifaceted story with a wide range of audiences.
Responsibilities and Essential Duties
● Collaborate with the Public Relations Manager to review content plans, coordinate messaging, and design and implement a social media strategy that aligns with the University’s public relations and communication goals.
● Serve as UMC’s resident expert on all social media platforms and provide insight into new applications and social trends.
● Generate, edit, publish, and share content that is customized to be engaging and useful for audiences on individual social media platforms, ensuring that brand and editorial standards are met.
● Lead the administration of Michigan Tech’s main social media accounts, including Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, and X.
● Interact with followers, respond to queries in a timely manner, and monitor engagement.
● Maintain the University’s directory of official social media accounts and social media administrators.
● Make recommendations for targeted social media campaigns.
● Advise the communications team on social media trends and make recommendations for social media engagement, including digital storytelling opportunities.
● Advise Michigan Tech’s colleges, departments, administrative units, and other affiliated campus groups on social media strategy and best practices, and work collaboratively with the digital services team to analyze metrics alongside web traffic.
● Share monthly reports of top-performing posts and overall performance by platform.
● Collaborate with the Public Relations Manager to support social listening efforts and track any crisis events that may arise.
● Support the public information officers on the University’s Incident Command Team as needed.
● Commit to learning about continuous improvement strategies and applying them to everyday work. Actively engage in University continuous improvement initiatives.
● Apply safety-related knowledge, skills, and practices to everyday work.
Required Education, Certifications, Licensures
● Bachelor’s degree, or an equivalent combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and abilities can be acquired.
Required Experience
● At least two years of experience managing multiple media accounts in a professional setting.
Desirable Education and/or Experience
● Bachelor’s degree in communication, marketing, English, journalism, or a related field, received from an appropriately accredited college or university.
● Three or more years of experience managing multiple social media accounts in a professional setting.
● Experience handling social media posts during an emergency, experience with incident command teams, or other crisis communications experience.
● Experience with social listening software.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and/or Abilities
● Extensive knowledge and understanding of social media platforms and their participants, including Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn and X.
● Experience writing content for social media platforms and an understanding of how the platforms are unique from each other.
● Experience measuring engagement on social media platforms and creating plans utilizing those measures.
● Excellent content-writing skills and an ability to deliver creative content (text, image, and video).
● Ability to adhere to brand and editorial style and guidelines.
● Exceptional interpersonal skills.
● Composed and professional in stressful situations, including emergency situations.
● Demonstrated success in working with persons with a wide variety of personal characteristics and viewpoints.
● Demonstrated commitment to contribute to a safe work environment.
Desirable Knowledge, Skills, and/or Abilities
● Ability to generate image and video content for social media.
● Experience with Canva, Adobe, or other visual content tools.
● Experience working within a brand guide to develop content.
