Social Worker - Investigative/Assessment and Treatment - (Child Protective Services On-Call)

Description of Work
Advanced level of social work position that involves receiving, screening and initiating Child Protective Services reports after the Department of Social Services’ regular business hours of Monday through Friday 8:00 am-5:00 pm. and includes weekends, holidays and whenever the Department is closed or on delay for inclement weather conditions.
- Initial response to abuse (physical and/or sexual), neglect and dependency reports on children
- Completion of thorough assessments, including use of strong interviewing and documentation skills, and making immediate decisions regarding the safety of children
- Establish protection plans
- Apply crisis intervention techniques
- Provide services up front to assure the maximum safety of children, which could include court action
- Continuously assess the safety, risk, and well-being of identified children
- Complete thorough CPS intake reports and screen according to policy
- Conduct assists for other counties
The position can include rotating schedules and work during and after business hours as well as holiday hours. Schedule may change according to staffing needs of the unit. The shift available at this time is listed below:
- On-call schedule of 7 days on, 7 days off. The shift runs from 3:00 PM to 8:00 AM, Wednesday to Wednesday.
- Position rotates working all agency observed holidays with others on the team.
Knowledge and Skill Requirements
Thorough knowledge of social work principles, techniques and practices and their applications to complex casework, treatment, and investigation of abuse or neglect of children; thorough knowledge of policies and procedures of federal and state law related to child protection; thorough knowledge of individual and group behavior, family dynamics, and medical, behavioral and/or psychosocial problems. Considerable knowledge of governmental and private organizations and resources in the community. Ability to interact and engage individuals who may not agree with the laws, rules or policies of the process or the programs; ability to prepare documentation such as written investigative reports for the court and case records; ability to testify in court; ability to use advanced case management interview techniques to establish a supportive relationship and involve families in the initial assessment for the need of services; ability to quickly assess the risks and safety of the client environment during daylight hours, after dark and in high crime areas; ability to analyze and assess child development safety issues in relation to risk factors; ability to analyze tense family situations and make decisions about removing children when their safety is in imminent danger; and ability to communicate effectively and establish supportive relationships with clients and professionals in the community.
Minimum Training and Experience Requirements:
- Master’s degree from an accredited school of social work and one (1+) year of social work experience; or
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited school of social work and two (2+) years of social work or counseling experience; or
- Master’s degree in a counseling field and two (2+) years of social work or counseling experience; or
- 4-year degree in a human services field or related curriculum and three (3+) years of social work or counseling experience; or
- Graduation from a 4-year college or university and four (4+) years of experience in rehabilitation counseling, pastoral counseling or a related human service field providing experience in the techniques of casework, group work or community organization; or
- An equivalent combination of training and experience.
Note: One year of work experience can be credited for completion of the social work collaborative.
Special Requirements:
Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license.
