Salary: £45,000 - 65,000 per year

Requirements

  • Experienced software engineer and people leader with sound technical judgement and a practical, supportive approach to team leadership
  • Ability to lead people and technical delivery while maintaining a hands-on contribution
  • Ability to set direction, organise work, make considered decisions, and support others development
  • Clear communication and effective collaboration across disciplines, including explaining technical concepts, risks, and trade-offs to stakeholders at all levels
  • Commitment to building high-quality, well-designed, maintainable systems and delivering dependable software
  • Experience with industrial systems, embedded environments, condition monitoring, Agile delivery, Software Configuration Management, or tools such as Atlassian Cloud is beneficial but not essential
  • Willingness to maintain Continuing Professional Development and stay current with relevant technologies, tools, practices, and industry developments

Responsibilities

  • Line-manage and develop software engineers, developers, and testers through regular one-to-ones, objective setting, performance reviews, coaching, and wellbeing support
  • Build an inclusive, collaborative, high-performing team; identify development needs and allocate resources effectively
  • Design, develop, and maintain complex software systems, contributing to architecture, technical decisions, and hands-on delivery
  • Lead design discussions and review user stories, acceptance criteria, and technical designs for feasibility, clarity, testability, and architectural alignment
  • Promote technical quality and knowledge-sharing through code reviews, pair programming, mentoring, and technical coaching
  • Coordinate team activities and support project planning, resource forecasting, dependency management, and predictable delivery
  • Provide timely updates on delivery status, risks, dependencies, and priorities to leadership and stakeholders
  • Support Agile planning, refinement, stand-ups, reviews, and retrospectives; lead or support customer discussions and technical reviews
  • Contribute to bids, estimates, and technical proposals
  • Support the software development roadmap and own the improvement of development methods, processes, toolsets, and configuration management
  • Evaluate and promote suitable technologies, frameworks, environments, and design patterns; improve development lifecycle practices, code quality, automation, observability, and delivery efficiency
  • Identify complex technical issues, analyse root causes, assess risks, and implement robust solutions and appropriate mitigations
  • Ensure software meets security, performance, safety, quality, and compliance standards, and maintain clear technical documentation and decision records
  • Collaborate across engineering and stakeholder groups, communicate technical proposals and constraints clearly, and influence technical direction
  • Consider safe systems of work, sustainability, and ethical software engineering in design and implementation decisions
