The Women’s Health Initiative (WHI) is a major, long-term research program designed to address cardiovascular disease, cancer and osteoporosis – the most frequent causes of death, disability and poor quality of life in postmenopausal women. It is one of the largest U.S. prevention studies of its kind and it is currently in its third extension. The WHI Clinical Coordinating Center (CCC) is located at Fred Hutch.

The Women’s Health Initiative is seeking an experienced full-time Statistical Unit Assistant. The Statistical Unit Assistant provides support to the Statistics Unit (SU) at the WHI CCC. The incumbent works under the direct supervision of the Statistics Unit Manager and will work closely with a team of statistical analysts. Incumbent receives direct supervision in performing work assignments, but with time and proven competence can gain independence in performing tasks. Incumbent refers to the manager for all non-routine decisions.

Responsibilities

  • Assist investigators working with WHI data as primary contact for the WHI Help Desk
    • Respond to data and other queries, bringing in SU analysts and other CCC staff as necessary to meet requests
    • Perform data queries by using a query tool and/or statistical software such as SAS or R, to subset or merge WHI datasets, calculate summary statistics, and output frequency tables, as appropriate, to answer investigator questions
    • Synthesize information and formulate responses to questions
    • Manage database for tracking questions and responses
  • Assist in the development and production of WHI statistical reports as well as tables and graphs for papers and publications
    • Work with SU analysts to query data and create tables and figures using statistical software, Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Adobe Acrobat for inclusion in manuscripts, presentations, and annual WHI statistical reports
    • Organize and track table progress for annual reports
    • Proofread and edit drafts of statistical reports for accuracy and consistency of content and formatting
  • Assist in data processing for the creation of data resources for WHI investigators
    • Work with Statistics Unit analysts to update code for processing data
    • Execute code scripts in SAS or R for processing data
    • Evaluate contents of WHI datasets for logic and accuracy, comparing variables across data sources, and retrieving data external to WHI for use by investigators
    • Evaluate and edit website content related to data documentation
  • Administer data use policies and procedures for outside investigators using WHI data
    • Manage tracking database of data use approvals
    • Manage data repository access for outside investigators
    • Correspond with investigators about their access
  • Provide administrative support to the Statistics Unit
    • Organize and schedule meetings and events
    • Survey scientific literature for articles relating to specific topics
    • Curate and improve systems for organizing data, code, and documentation

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelor’s degree with a major in statistics, biostatistics, public health, or potentially any field with data manipulation experience, or 2 years’ related experience with data, or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Experience or coursework in statistical software for data management and statistical analysis
  • Some experience or coursework in statistical software for data management and statistical analysis
  • Inquisitiveness, desire to learn new skills, quantitative aptitude, along with the ability to think logically and systematically
  • Proficient computer skills including word processing, spreadsheets and graphical displays
  • Strong organizational skills, self-motivation and flexibility
  • Proven written and oral communications skills
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Ability to work both independently and in a team environment
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Knowledge of basic statistics and experience working with statistical data
  • Interest in clinical and epidemiological research

The hourly pay range for this position is from $27.80 to $39.58 and pay offered will be based on experience and qualifications.
