Job Summary
The Sterile Processing Technician Trainee is responsible for cleaning, disinfecting, and sterilizing medical supplies via theuse of steam, gas, or chemicals under the supervision of a Sterile Processing Tech. The processing technician traineeprepares treatment and procedure trays, wraps medical devices, and prepares surgical case carts under the supervisionof a Sterile Processing Technician. The Sterile Processing Technician trainee maintains the sterile supply storage area andis responsible for receiving and distributing departmental supplies.
Responsibilities
Performs Instrument Processing Accurately assembles, labels, and prepares instruments and supplies for sterilization according toavailable references and resources. Routinely tests instruments to ensure functionality. Cleans, tests and safely operates a variety of sterilizers and decontamination equipment, followingproper procedure and maintaining accurate documentation related to such activities. Maintains and monitors controls necessary to prevent cross infection according to infection controlpolicies. Verifies contents of outside vendor trays, as per hospital policy. Uses appropriate PPE as per policy. Documents missing instruments(s) according to procedure. Uses count sheet. Disassembles, cleans and decontaminates instruments and equipment according to establishedprocedures. Participates in pulling instruments for refurbishing when asked. Accurately uses the impres system to label, assemble and track trays to other departments and returnto sterile storage or decontam by scanners. Identifys trays that are over "set usage" and notifies supervisor of trays to be refurbished. Equipment Usage Takes initiative to follow up and ensure that equipment is returned to the unit in proper condition. Operates equipment accurately and safely, according to policy, procedure and or manufacturer'sdirections. Quickly learns to use new equpmnet. Uses equipment independently. Leaves equipment prepared for next procedure i.e. cleaning and restocking as appropriate. Performs Other Duties as Required Attends mandatory in-services, staff meetings, actively participates in self-education and completesall required competency assessments on time. Willingly performs other duties as required. Identifies appropriate cases of abuse and neglect and demonstrates knowledge of mandatoryreporting requirements.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Heavy Work: Frequent lifting and/or carrying of objects weighing up to 50 lbs with a maximum lifting of 100 lbs. Experience in a sterile processing area or operating room preferred.Demonstrated ability to utilize aseptic and sterile techniques normally acquired through previous work experience or formalcourse work/training.
