General Functions:
The Substitute Teacher provides on-call quality education to infants, toddlers, and preschoolers at the Clare Swan Early Learning Center, increasing social competence, school readiness, and knowledge and pride in traditional Alaska Native culture and heritage. This position ensures a healthy, safe environment while supervising simultaneous learning activities and supporting enrolled children's development. Working in partnership with our people, the Substitute Teacher helps develop opportunities that fulfill our endless potential by promoting each child's cognitive, social, emotional, and physical growth.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Implement lesson plans to enhance the education, health, social and emotional growth of children and families served.
- Utilize varied teaching strategies to meet educational and developmental goals addressing physical, emotional, social, cultural, cognitive and language needs of enrolled children.
- Apply appropriate discipline and guidance techniques including redirection, acknowledgement of appropriate behavior, and setting acceptable limits.
- Provide a healthy, safe and secure learning environment using consistent limits, appropriate guidance techniques, and developing an atmosphere of respect.
- Maintain open, friendly, and cooperative relationships with families while encouraging program involvement and promoting parent-child bonding.
- Promote feelings of security and trust in infants, toddlers and preschoolers by being warm, supportive, and establishing strong caring relationships.
- Provide children with experiences and opportunities to develop curiosity, initiative, problem-solving skills, creativity, sense of self and belonging.
- Conduct developmental screenings of children's motor, language, social, cognitive, perceptual, and emotional skills.
- Demonstrate flexibility with respect to time and days available to work, as well as adaptability with work tasks.
- Provide coverage at the Drop-in Center as needed.
- Maintain confidentiality according to regulations, policies, and procedures.
- Perform all related duties as needed and assigned.

- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision as well as collaboratively as part of a team.
- Proficient with computers including word processing, email communication, internet resourcing, spreadsheets, and childcare management software.
- Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the social, health, educational, training, and cultural needs of the Alaska Native and American Indian community.
- Required participation in 15 hours of training annually as assigned by supervisor.
Minimum Core Competencies:

Minimum Qualifications:
- Continued employment is contingent upon completion of satisfactory state and federal fingerprint criminal background check.
- High School Diploma or GED.
- Child Development Associate Credential (CDA) certified at time of hire or obtained within 1 year of employment.
- One (1) year of experience working with children.
- Available to work 10-29 hours per week.
- Infant/Toddler CPR/First Aid certified at time of hire.
- Must provide copy of current Health Report.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Two (2) years of experience working in a Head Start environment.
- Former or current Head Start Parents are encouraged to apply.

- Frequently be physically active without getting tired, including active play and activities.
- The ability to be on your feet for long periods of time.
- Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds frequently, by utilizing proper lifting techniques and working in a safe manner.
- Able to get up and down off the floor with ease, including kneeling, bending, squatting.
- The ability to wear the appropriate PPE.
- Frequently exposed to bodily fluids.
- Possible exposure to noise, and contaminants such as cleaning solvents.
- Routinely exposed to outdoor conditions including inclement weather.
