The Geotechnical Engineering Unit collects and analyzes subsurface information and provides geotechnical engineering designs and recommendations for roadway slopes, embankments, subgrades, and foundations to ensure stability and cost-effective construction. The Geotechnical Engineering Unit is looking for a Subsurface Data Manager and Modeler in our Central office at the Century Center.
- Manage and maintain large data sets generated from geotechnical subsurface investigations and soil and rock laboratory testing. While not required, good understanding of NCDOT or other DOT geotechnical investigation practices, soil and rock testing, or related laboratory work can be beneficial.
- Ensure data integrity and consistency by maintaining Unit best practices, reporting standards, templates, and assisting with development of data governance policies.
- Explore and facilitate data integration between different software applications to organize and visualize subsurface data.
- Manipulate data sets and perform statistical analyses for engineering design decision making.
- Periodically assess software and applications for subsurface data visualization and geotechnical analysis through testing in a production environment or overseeing pilot projects.
- Build and update models of subsurface formations using geological and engineering data for design and contracting purposes.
- Generate visualizations, reports, and presentations for decision-making and stakeholder communication.
- Support Department Digital Delivery initiative by understanding how models are used in the preparation of project contract documents and representing the Unit in preconstruction, construction, and asset management working groups.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies

Demonstrated ability to identify opportunities for innovation and improvement in managing digital assets such as subsurface and laboratory data.
Experience using CADD or 3D modeling to communicate data for design and construction purposes.
Demonstrated ability to adjust technical language and content to the needs of diverse audiences, ensuring that both experts and non-specialists can effectively utilize digital data and models.
Demonstrated ability to consolidate data from multiple sources for statistical or other analyses.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Bachelor's degree in an applicable field of engineering from an appropriately accredited institution and four (4) years of progressively responsible experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Necessary Special Qualification May require registration as a professional engineer by the North Carolina Board of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors.
