ABOUT THE POSITION:
Under the general direction of a manager, the primary role of this position is to plan, organize, and supervise the activities of the technical and office support staff in examining the pleadings and accounts in probate matters for sufficiency as to form, content, and procedural requirements; consults on difficult probate cases and performance matters; and performs other duties as required.
The Supervising Probate Examiner is a single level classification that is responsible for the supervision and training of office support staff, Probate Checkers, and Probate Examiners performing examinations of probate filings, including conservatorship and guardianship matters. The Supervising Probate Examiner may also perform examinations of probate matters as required, particularly those matters characterized by exceptionally difficult and/or complex cases.
Duties may include but are not limited to the following:
- . Confers with judicial officers, probate attorneys and other court staff in developing guidelines and procedures for processing probate matters
- . Provides training in the application of the California Probate Code and legal procedures concerning the review of probate matters and preparation of probate notes
- . Consults with management and court staff regarding principles and practices for researching difficult and/or complex probate matters requiring thorough analysis of the diverse portions of the California Probate Code. Compiles and analyzes statistical data to propose recommendations to higher level management staff revisions of Probate Court policies, procedures, rules and forms. Maintains awareness of staffing needs and workload within area of responsibility; assists in the screening and hiring of employees; interviews and recommends candidates for hire.
Minimum Qualifications
A B.A or B.S degree from an accredited educational institution and a minimum of two (2) years of full-time (or equivalent) experience employed with a Court, a public or private law office, a public administrator, public guardian, public conservator, or private profession fiduciary.
-OR-
A paralegal certificate or an Associate of Arts degree from an accredited educational institution and a minimum of four (4) years of full-time (or equivalent) employment experience with one or more of the employers listed above.
-OR-
A juris doctor degree from an educational institution approved by the American Bar Association or accredited by the Committee of Bar Examiners of the State Bar of California and a minimum of six (6) months of full-time (or equivalent) employment experience with an employer listed above.

In addition to one of the experience/education options above, candidates must also have the following:
One (1) year full-time (or equivalent) experience in a Court or related setting performing court case processing, calendaring or other complex court-related office or administrative support duties.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
At least five (5) years' experience as a Probate Court Examiner.
Experience in preparing taxes, real estate transactions, or banking with fiduciary accounts.
Experience in a leadership or supervisory role.
