Systems Engineer – Dataflow Management

Salary Range: $67.67–$91.63 per hour

Wyetech is seeking an experienced Systems Engineer to support mission-critical operational systems and dataflow management within a dynamic technical environment. The selected candidate will contribute directly to mission success by ensuring the reliability, scalability, and performance of systems that process, manage, and deliver critical mission data to end users.

This position supports the modernization of dataflows and operational systems, including transitioning legacy hardware-based capabilities into cloud-based environments while meeting real-time mission requirements.

The ideal candidate will have experience with systems engineering, mission-data processing, operational support, and dataflow technologies such as Apache NiFi. This role offers the opportunity to develop and improve systems that support mission decision-making and operational effectiveness.

Key Responsibilities

Dataflow Management & Modernization

  • Review and process Dataflow Management Requests (DMRs) and implement efficient, mission-focused dataflow solutions.
  • Create, configure, maintain, and manage dataflows using Apache NiFi.
  • Support operational systems responsible for processing, maintaining, and delivering mission-critical data.
  • Modernize existing dataflows, including transitioning hardware-based systems to virtualized and cloud environments.
  • Evaluate existing dataflows, identify operational requirements, and rebuild or enhance flows in collaboration with mission operations teams.
  • Identify opportunities to improve dataflow reliability, scalability, availability, and performance.
  • Support the integration of new technologies into existing operational environments.

Systems Engineering & Architecture

  • Analyze operational requirements and develop system-level requirements and technical specifications.
  • Develop system architecture diagrams depicting software components, system functions, interfaces, and dataflows.
  • Evaluate existing system architectures and recommend technical improvements.
  • Support requirements analysis, system design, implementation, integration, testing, and sustainment activities.
  • Participate in engineering discussions to evaluate technical alternatives and develop solutions that meet mission objectives.
  • Develop and maintain technical documentation, including system designs, interface specifications, operational procedures, and requirements documentation.
  • Support system verification and validation to ensure implemented solutions meet established requirements.
  • Collaborate with engineering, development, and operational teams to resolve technical challenges.

Operational Support & Collaboration

  • Work directly with mission operations personnel to understand analytical requirements and operational needs.
  • Coordinate with cross-functional teams to implement and sustain mission-data processing capabilities.
  • Diagnose and resolve issues affecting operational dataflows and supporting systems.
  • Assist with software configuration management, system updates, and operational improvements.
  • Communicate technical concepts and system requirements effectively to engineering teams and mission stakeholders.
  • Participate in system integration, testing, and continuous improvement activities.
  • Provide on-call operational support following approximately six (6) months of on-the-job training.

Required Qualifications

  • Active TS/SCI security clearance with current Full Scope Polygraph (FSP) is required.
  • Ten (10) years of experience as a Systems Engineer supporting programs and contracts of similar scope, type, and complexity.
  • Bachelor's degree in Systems Engineering, Computer Science, Information Systems, Engineering Science, Engineering Management, or a related discipline from an accredited college or university.
  • Five (5) years of additional Systems Engineering experience may be substituted for a bachelor's degree.
  • Experience analyzing system requirements, supporting system architecture development, and implementing technical solutions.
  • Ability to evaluate existing systems and develop requirements supporting operational improvements.
  • Experience developing technical documentation, system design materials, and architecture diagrams.
  • Understanding of systems engineering processes, including requirements analysis, system integration, verification, and validation.
  • Ability to collaborate with engineering teams, operational personnel, and mission stakeholders.
  • Strong analytical, troubleshooting, problem-solving, and communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and within a mission-focused technical team.
  • Willingness and ability to participate in on-call support after the initial training period.

Desired Qualifications

  • Minimum of four (4) years of experience within the Intelligence Community, supporting mission systems that process and manage mission data.
  • Experience working with mission data formats and operational data-processing systems.
  • Familiarity with Linux operating systems and command-line interfaces (CLI) for software configuration, administration, and upgrades.
  • Experience reviewing and processing Dataflow Management Requests (DMRs).
  • Experience using Apache NiFi to create, configure, maintain, and manage dataflows.
  • Experience gathering, analyzing, and documenting analytical requirements and mission needs.
  • Experience creating system architecture diagrams depicting software components, system functions, and interfaces.
  • Familiarity with Apache ZooKeeper, Elasticsearch, Grafana, and NiFi Registry.
  • Experience supporting dataflow modernization and migration from hardware-based systems to cloud or virtual environments.
  • Experience developing requirements related to system performance, availability, scalability, manageability, and security.
  • Experience producing technical documentation for system issues, operational procedures, and training.
  • Familiarity with Agile or iterative systems development methodologies.
  • Experience integrating and extending Commercial Off-the-Shelf (COTS) and Government Off-the-Shelf (GOTS) technologies.
  • Experience supporting distributed storage, cloud infrastructure, or large-scale data-processing environments.
  • Experience collaborating within Integrated Product Teams (IPTs) or other cross-functional technical teams.

Additional Systems Engineering Capabilities

  • Support the development of system requirements specifications derived from operational needs and high-level architectures.
  • Participate in systems engineering activities involving requirements development, interface definition, system design, and integration.
  • Evaluate technical alternatives and recommend solutions aligned with mission requirements.
  • Support development of system engineering documentation, including requirements specifications, interface control documents, and system design materials.
  • Assist with system verification, validation, and integration testing.
  • Support configuration management and requirements traceability throughout the system lifecycle.
  • Identify system risks, technical dependencies, and potential operational impacts.
