Network Specialist IV (Network Specialist)
· Performs highly complex (senior-level) network systems work. Works under limited supervision, with considerable latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment. Employees at this level may: Coordinate and/or design and maintain local area network implementations.
· Monitor network security, including registering users and installing firewalls.
· Monitor the operational network environment and take corrective measures to ensure efficient performance.
· Design or coordinate the designing of the procedures necessary to save and recover local area or wide area network environments from hardware and software failures.
· This position requires up to 10% travel throughout the state of Texas.
· May be required to work overtime, on holidays and weekends.
This position:
· Uses software monitoring tools and other techniques to maintain high quality diagnostic capability to solve complex networking problems
· Leads or assists with the installation, maintenance, administration, and troubleshooting of local- and wide-area network technologies including, but not limited to: VLANs, BGP, VoIP, Quality of Service, Routing, Switching, Wireless Networking.
· Receives high level instructions for tasks and activities, organizes instructions into detailed tasks
· Utilizes the agency ticketing system to enter and track problems and work request
· Creates automation routines using scripting and other programming languages
· Assists development and project teams in designing applications consistent with established architecture
· Creates and maintains accurate documentation
· Conducts training of staff prior to implementation of systems, provides advice and guidance during and post implementation
· Oversees, trains, and mentors other team members on adherence to accepted operating procedures
Performs other duties as assigned
Qualifications
This position requires:
· Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with major coursework in computer science, management information systems, or a related field is generally preferred.
· Three years of network infrastructure support
· Regular work attendance
Note: Education and experience relevant to position requirements may be substituted for one another on a year-for-year basis.
Preferences for this position include:
· Experience maintaining the following Cisco products; Identity Services Engine(ISE), Firepower Management Console (FMC), Cisco Next Generation Firewalls, VPN, 9K switches, routers, Umbrella SWG, and Meraki wireless.
· Experience writing scripts to automate network management, e.g., Python, Perl, Bash, PowerShell.
· Network performance monitoring and capacity management
· Network Certification
This position requires demonstrated knowledge of:
· State laws, rules, procedures, and regulations relevant to job requirements.
This position requires demonstrated skill in:
· Problem solving and critical thinking.
· Using Microsoft Office software applications, including Word, Excel, Outlook, and SharePoint.
· Using personal computers sufficient to enter and extract data from related systems and programs such as Centralized Accounting Payroll and Personnel (CAPPS) and other systems required to perform the job.
· Operating a motor vehicle in a safe and courteous manner in compliance with traffic laws.
· Recognizing, analyzing, and resolving network problems.
This position requires the demonstrated ability to:

· Maintain the confidentiality of sensitive information.
· Analyze and solve work-related problems and work independently on a variety of administrative work and technical assignments.
