General description
The Unclaimed Property Division is responsible for administering the state’s unclaimed property program and returning abandoned property to its rightful owners.
To accomplish this objective, division staff receives and processes property reports from holders; provides information and assistance to claimants; verifies and processes claims, evaluates data for system implementation and manages the contract audit and voluntary disclosure programs. Owner outreach efforts include posting available properties on two online searchable databases (ClaimItTexas.gov and Missingmoney.com) and owner notice mailings.
This position will be responsible for validating and paying business and general claims; and answering customer calls. We are seeking candidates with excellent customer service and critical thinking skills.
This position may be eligible for a flexible/hybrid work schedule if certain conditions are met; working arrangements may change at any time as business necessitates.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
- Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university.
- Four (4) years of customer service experience.
- Two (2) years of experience responding to customer telephone and email inquiries
- Experience reviewing and approving claims.
Preferred Qualifications
- Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a degree in accounting, business administration, finance, marketing or a related field.
- Experience processing unclaimed property requests.
- Experience working in an environment with a high volume of incoming customer inquiries.
- Experience at a banking institution or brokerage firm.
- Experience reviewing probate court documents.
- Communicating effectively in writing and verbally in Spanish.
Substitution:
One additional year of full-time experience providing customer service or making decisions on customer claims may substitute for each year (30 semester hours) of the required education with a maximum of 120 semester hours (four years).
In this role you will:
- Respond to email, letter, telephone inquiries and web requests from claimants. Research and generate claims based on written correspondence and telephone inquiries. Conduct research on numerous property types, including but not limited to banking accounts, money orders, official checks, traveler cheques, insurance policies, earnest money and escrow accounts. Submit requests for documentation to claimants.
- Review, edits and determine the validity of unclaimed property claims. Process and decision various claim types as assigned, including but not limited to owner, power of attorney, estate/executor, minor, guardianship and holder refunds and reimbursements. Process, examine, edit, and update claimed properties; document actions; and monitor claims for completion of subsequent actions.
- Communicate status and progress of activities and workload inventories and recommends resolutions for reported problems. Keep supervisor informed of significant problems or errors and their causes. Provide requested written information in a clear and concise manner consistent with division and agency guidelines.
