Assigned to Streets and Traffic Division:
Typical Summer Shift: Monday - Friday 7:00 am - 3:30 pm
Typical Winter Shift: Monday - Friday 8:00 am - 4:30 pm,
with two 12-hour rotating snow plow shifts, which may include weekends and holidays.

What You’ll Do:

  • Install and repair traffic signs, signals, and pavement markings
  • Maintain inventory and perform minor equipment repairs
  • Set up cones, barricades, and seasonal decorations
  • Conduct traffic studies and support street safety projects
  • Work rotating snow shifts in winter to help keep roads clear

Incumbent is responsible for performing routine traffic tasks including fabricating, installing, and maintaining traffic control devices.

REPORTING STRUCTURE:

Receives general supervision from higher-level supervisory and management staff.

Typical Class Essential Duties

1. Fabricates, installs, maintains, repairs, and sets a variety of traffic control devices including signs, traffic signals, and/or related highway devices.

2. Paints and marks curbs, pavements, and parking lots.

3. Performs minor repairs on equipment and reports the need for major repairs; checks and adjusts fluid levels; greases and lubricates parts as required.

4. Maintains inventory of traffic signs.

5. Identifies equipment needs for each assigned project and installs road barricades and/or cones for road repair activities.

6. Performs traffic studies using mechanical devices and computers.

7. Places and removes seasonal decorations around the City.

8. Represents the City of Casper by responding to the public, citizens, its employees, and others in a prompt, professional, and courteous manner while continuously maintaining a positive customer service demeanor.

9. Performs other duties of a similar nature or level.

Knowledge (position requirements at entry):
Knowledge of:
  • Operation and maintenance requirements of trucks and routine power-driven equipment.
  • Practices and procedures used in installation and maintenance of traffic control.
  • Painting and marking techniques.

Abilities (position requirements at entry):
Ability to:
  • Operate a variety of tools and equipment utilized in the traffic control trade.
  • Routinely demonstrate the City of Casper core values.
  • Work independently or in a crew situation, as assigned.
  • Learn the traffic laws, ordinances, and rules involved in truck and equipment operations.
  • Perform a variety of construction and maintenance tasks.
  • Learn how to read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and/or other technical drawings.
  • Learn City geography including street names, number systems, directional orientation, and major landmarks.
  • Communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
  • Follow written and verbal instructions and direction
  • Be flexible with assignments, which may change.
  • Work according to safety standards under potentially hazardous conditions.
  • Respond to call-outs after hours, weekends, and holidays.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
  • Follow all City safety rules and procedures and immediately report all accidents/incidents or unsafe conditions to a supervisor.

  • Using and caring for applicable tools and equipment.
  • Maintaining inventory.
  • Installing traffic control systems and fixtures.

Training, Experience & Certifications

Education and Experience:
  • High school diploma or equivalent (G.E.D.) required.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Minimum of one year of increasingly responsible experience in street marking and sign installation preferred.

Licensing and Certification Requirements:
  • Possession of a valid Wyoming Class B CDL driver’s license preferred.

Supplemental Information & Physical Requirements

The above job description is intended to represent only the key areas of responsibilities; specific position assignments will vary depending on the business needs of the department.

This position is eligible to naturally progress to a Traffic Technician II once an incumbent meets all the requirements for a Traffic Technician II level and is pre-authorized by the Department Head, who must determine the operational need and budgetary requirements prior to an incumbent obtaining these requirements and/or working in this capacity.

As a condition of employment, the successful candidate must utilize direct deposit for payroll purposes.

Driving records are required for all new employees regardless of the position's driving requirements. If the employee has not held a Wyoming driver's license for the last three years, the employee must provide at their own initiation and expense a driving record from their previous state(s) of residence.

Physical and Environmental Conditions:
City of Casper employees in data creation and modification, security sensitive or safety and protective positions are subject to pre-employment drug testing. Some employees may be subject to random drug testing if their responsibilities include:
  • Emergency response/rescue
  • Handling or working with hazardous materials, including chemicals as well as solid and liquid waste
  • Operating or maintaining water and wastewater systems
  • Writing or modifying code, maintaining or modifying City data systems including work on networks, servers, and communication systems
  • CDL operations and driving
  • Operating power-driven machinery or equipment
  • Creating or modifying health, financial, security and or risk documents or assessments
  • Working with or directing minors

Positions in this class typically require: stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions.

Medium work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to lift, carry, push, and pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body.

Incumbents may be subjected to moving mechanical parts, electrical currents, fumes, odors, dusts, chemicals, and extreme temperatures.
