The Transportation Specialist works as a contributing member of a train crew, either operating a locomotive or serving as a conductor/brakeman. The role involves switching freight cars, assembling trains in rail yards or along the line, and ensuring safe, efficient rail operations.

Essential Functions

Carry out specific instructions for train routes, setouts, and pick-ups, including switching and servicing industries along the line.

Perform coupling and uncoupling of railcars, including handling and lifting coupling devices.

Observe, interpret, and relay signals or other indications affecting train movement, including track flags, block signals, and interlocking systems.

Use hand or radio signals to direct train movement, start/stop operations, and manage air brake systems, including performing FRA-required brake tests.

Inspect rolling stock for defects, wear, and compliance with safety standards.

Conduct daily locomotive inspections per FRA and company rules.

Complete forms such as track warrants, bulletins, and wheel reports legibly and accurately.

Remain alert to changing conditions and respond appropriately to maintain safety and operational efficiency.

Conduct job briefings and ensure adherence to all safety protocols.

Handle emergency situations, including the use of fire extinguishers and administering first aid when required.

Assist with work trains, re-railing operations, and track maintenance as needed.

Monitor tracks for obstructions and anticipate potential issues per federal and company rules.

Use required personal safety apparel and equipment.

Occasionally assist with Maintenance of Way or Car Repair duties.

Supervisory Responsibility

This position does not have supervisory responsibilities.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

This is a full-time position. Shifts may run up to 12 hours, and employees will be required to work weekends, evenings, and extended periods away from home as job duties demand.

Travel Requirements

Travel is required for this position and may involve extended periods away from home.

Required Education and Experience

High school diploma or equivalent.

Previous railroad experience or vocational training in freight train operations preferred.

Valid driver’s license and insurable driving record.

Ability to pass FRA-required examinations and medical requirements, including visual and hearing acuity tests.

Preferred Education and Experience

Prior certification as a locomotive engineer with a documented safe work record as required by 49 CFR § 240.

Physical Requirements

Must be able to lift objects up to 75 pounds, such as knuckles or end-of-train devices.

Requires climbing, balancing, stooping, bending, and crawling as part of daily duties.

Ability to climb ladders, traverse uneven terrain, and maintain balance on moving or stationary equipment.

Must perform repetitive motions, including reaching, twisting, and stretching.

Able to work outdoors in all weather conditions and remain on duty for long shifts.

Environmental Requirements

Work is conducted outdoors, often in extreme weather conditions.

Exposure to hazardous conditions requiring constant awareness and adherence to safety protocols.

Cognitive Requirements

Strong mechanical aptitude to understand locomotive and brake systems.

Ability to comprehend and react to signals, auditory warnings, and weight/speed dynamics.

Effective verbal and written communication skills for transmitting information and documenting operational details.

  • Driver’s License: Position requires a valid driver’s license. We are required by federal law to run a motor vehicle (MVR) check on our engineers and conductors each time they are re-certified.
  • Insurability: Must be insurable to drive company vehicles. Most employees need to drive company vehicles from time to time, and you must be insurable with RRVW’s insurance company.
  • Drug and Alcohol Testing: Position is subject to pre-employment and random drug and alcohol testing. Federal law requires railroads employing more than 15 people to conduct random drug and alcohol testing. We also require pre-employment drug testing. Employees operating a locomotive or working as a conductor are included in the random drug and alcohol testing pool.
  • Rules Tests: Must pass required rules tests with a minimum score of 85%.
  • Physical Exam: If hired, a physical exam will be conducted by a medical doctor (MD).

This is a full-time?(40 hours/week) position, that is subject to on-call (24/7), nights, weekends, and holidays. Must be able to report to work on time within a 2-hour call window.
