POSITION SUMMARY: Water Exercise Instructor
A Water Exercise Instructor is responsible for teaching a variety of group exercise classes in both the Indoor and Outdoor Aquatics Center. Instructors are responsible for leading participants through a safe, efficient exercise routine suitable for their skill level. All classes taught should reflect guidelines set forth by the Aquatic Exercise Association (AEA) or equivalent. Water Exercise Instructors work under the supervision of the Aquatics Manager.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Follow exercise guidelines set forth by the Aquatic Exercise Association (AEA) or equivalent.
- Teach exercises appropriate for participant’s fitness level and physical ability.
- Demonstrate modifications for any exercise that may not be appropriate for all class participants.
- Communicates with other water exercise instructors, lifeguards, or facility staff the need for additional assistance or equipment.
- Educates participants and enforces the rules of the facility.
- Makes recommendations for other aquatic or land-based group exercise classes that may benefit the participant.
QUALIFICATIONS
Necessary Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Possess and maintain current AEA Certification.
- Possess and maintain current (must not be expired) CPR/AED Certification.
- Knowledge of cardiovascular and resistance exercises appropriate in water.
- Knowledge of correct exercise techniques and appropriate progression.
- Ability to work with different age groups.
- Ability to follow and give oral and verbal instructions.
- Ability to work flexible hours with evening and weekend work required.
- Ability to appear on time for work and notify the appropriate individual if unable to work.
- Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with other employees and the members.
- Ability to work with minimal daily supervision.
Education and Experience
- Candidate must be age 18 or over. Also, candidate must possess a thorough knowledge of exercise, and how it is applied in an aquatic setting. Candidate should also be able to modify exercises in order to accommodate participants with medical restrictions or special needs. Aquatic Exercise Association (AEA) certification or equivalent preferred.
EQUIPMENT USED
- Standard pool equipment, water buoys.
