Job description

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Backend Software Engineer II – Data Platform based in the United States.

This role will help build the data platform that powers critical healthcare products and business operations. You will develop backend services that transform data from health plans, employers, and other partners into reliable, usable information. Your work will support core domains including member identity, eligibility, billing, integrations, reporting, and analytics. Working primarily with Python, you will take features from design through production while developing deeper ownership of services and technical decisions. You will solve challenging problems involving incomplete, duplicated, delayed, and inconsistent real-world data. The role offers the opportunity to strengthen the reliability, scalability, observability, and performance of data-intensive systems in a mission-driven environment. This is a strong opportunity for a backend engineer who enjoys practical problem-solving, distributed systems, and building dependable data infrastructure.

Accountabilities:

  • Build and maintain backend services that ingest, validate, reconcile, transform, and serve data received from external partners.
  • Develop reliable systems supporting member identity, eligibility, billing, integrations, and other critical business domains.
  • Design and implement APIs, asynchronous workflows, and data pipelines used across the organization.
  • Build systems capable of handling incomplete, duplicated, delayed, inconsistent, and otherwise imperfect real-world data.
  • Implement reliable mechanisms for retrying, replaying, recovering, and reconciling data when processing failures occur.
  • Improve the reliability, observability, test coverage, performance, and maintainability of production systems.
  • Collaborate with Engineering, Product, and Operations teams to clarify ambiguous requirements and determine effective technical solutions.
  • Take features from initial design through implementation, deployment, and production operation.
  • Investigate unfamiliar areas of the codebase, understand existing architecture, and make thoughtful improvements without introducing unnecessary complexity.
  • Contribute to technical decisions and gradually take greater ownership of backend services and system design.
  • Apply strong engineering practices around correctness, validation, idempotency, error handling, retries, and edge cases.
  • Support additional engineering initiatives and responsibilities as business and team priorities evolve.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent educational background is required.
  • 2+ years of professional experience building and maintaining backend software.
  • Strong programming fundamentals, with professional experience in Python preferred.
  • Experience working with relational databases and SQL.
  • Experience developing systems that process, transform, or move significant volumes of data.
  • Solid understanding of software testing, debugging, API design, and common distributed-system failure modes.
  • Experience deploying or operating applications in a cloud environment.
  • Strong instincts around system correctness, including data validation, idempotency, retries, recovery, and edge-case handling.
  • Ability to quickly understand an unfamiliar codebase and improve it while maintaining simplicity and reliability.
  • Strong written communication skills and the ability to clearly explain technical decisions, tradeoffs, and approaches.
  • Experience with data-intensive backend systems, ETL/ELT pipelines, or event-driven architectures is preferred.
  • Familiarity with PostgreSQL, analytical data warehouses, or data modeling is an advantage.
  • Experience with infrastructure as code, containers, or workflow orchestration is a plus.
  • Exposure to identity resolution, entity matching, eligibility, claims, healthcare data, or other complex data domains is beneficial.
  • Experience working in regulated or security-sensitive production environments is desirable.
  • Previous healthcare experience is not required, and candidates do not need experience with every technology used by the organization.
  • Candidates must be authorized to work in the United States; work visa sponsorship is not available.
  • Employees must reside in and work from the United States, subject to applicable employment eligibility requirements.

Benefits

  • Annual salary range of $120,000–$130,000.
  • Fully remote position within the United States.
  • Opportunity to work on backend and data infrastructure supporting meaningful healthcare outcomes.
  • Exposure to complex data engineering challenges involving identity, eligibility, billing, partner integrations, and analytics.
  • Opportunity to grow from well-defined engineering assignments toward greater ownership of services and technical decisions.
  • Collaborative work across Engineering, Product, and Operations teams.
  • Opportunity to contribute to reliable, scalable, and security-conscious production systems.
  • Inclusive and diverse working environment committed to equal employment opportunities and professional development.
  • Reasonable accommodations available for qualified individuals with disabilities and disabled veterans.
