Business Intelligence Architect & Analytics

GENERAL

SUMMARY

Intermediate-level technical resource responsible for developing, administering, optimizing, and supporting enterprise business intelligence and analytics solutions, with primary emphasis on Microsoft Power BI and Fabric. The role independently delivers moderately complex reports and semantic models, applies established architecture and governance standards, and troubleshoots performance, refresh, security, and access issues.

In addition to report development, this position supports day-to-day Power BI and Fabric administration, including workspace and item access, deployment support, gateway and data source coordination, refresh monitoring, and governed self-service enablement. The role partners with business users and senior technical resources to improve adoption, reliability, performance, and data literacy while escalating high-risk tenant, capacity, security, or architecture decisions when appropriate. Assistance and leadership on project management is required, and team management responsibilities are possible moving forward.

PRINCIPAL

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Design, develop, test, deploy, and maintain moderately complex Power BI reports, dashboards, semantic models, measures, and KPIs using governed enterprise data sources and dimensional modeling standards.
  • Optimize Power BI model and report performance by analyzing model size, DAX and visual behavior, relationships, cardinality, query patterns, refresh performance, and source-system response times.
  • Evaluate and recommend Import, DirectQuery, composite, or hybrid approaches based on performance, data volume, freshness, security, source-system capacity, and operational support requirements; document material trade-offs and escalate architecture exceptions.
  • Configure and support incremental refresh and partitioning strategies, including parameters, query folding validation, refresh windows, change-detection options, and hybrid real-time requirements where applicable.
  • Design and maintain aggregation strategies, including manual or automatic aggregations where appropriate, to improve query performance while validating that detail-level accuracy and security behavior are preserved.
  • Preparing Power BI semantic models for integration with CoPilot AI Agents.
  • Administer Power BI and Fabric access within assigned scope, including workspace roles, app audiences, item permissions, semantic model Build access, sharing, row-level and object-level security coordination, gateway/data source permissions, and least-privilege access reviews.
  • Monitor and troubleshoot semantic model refreshes, gateways, credentials, deployment issues, usage, and performance; resolve intermediate incidents independently and escalate tenant, capacity, network, identity, or source-platform issues with clear diagnostic evidence.
  • Apply development lifecycle and governance practices, including source control where available, workspace and deployment-pipeline conventions, peer review, testing, release documentation, change management, endorsement, and promotion of certified or governed data assets.
  • Enable self-service analytics by training business users, preparing support documentation, advising on approved datasets and models, and promoting effective visualization, accessibility, and data interpretation practices.
  • Validate and reconcile report outputs; document lineage, business definitions, dependencies, refresh schedules, security design, support procedures, and known limitations to improve operational continuity and audit readiness.
  • In accordance with the NIST CSF and Hallmark Standards, ensure adherence to policies and processes to remain in compliance for maintenance, security continuous monitoring and recovery areas including Asset Management, Change Management, Incident Management, Problem Management, Vulnerability & Patch Management, Data Security, Disaster Recovery and Business Continuity.

JOB SPECIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Data Analytics, Engineering, or a related field preferred OR a Bachelor’s degree in a non-technical field with relevant experience in the specifications provided below.
  • 3-5 years of experience delivering business intelligence or analytics solutions, including at least 2 years of hands-on Power BI development and service administration responsibilities.
  • Advanced proficiency with Power BI Desktop and the Power BI/Fabric service, including semantic modeling, Power Query, DAX, report design, publishing, refresh configuration, and troubleshooting.
  • Demonstrated ability to improve Power BI performance using star-schema principles, model simplification, efficient DAX, appropriate relationships and cardinality, reduced visual/query load, and available diagnostic tools such as Performance Analyzer, refresh history, or capacity metrics.
  • Working knowledge of Import, DirectQuery, composite, hybrid, and Direct Lake concepts, with the ability to explain selection criteria and operational trade-offs involving performance, freshness, scale, security, and source-system impact.
  • Hands-on experience configuring or supporting incremental refresh, including parameters, filter logic, query folding, partition behavior, refresh policy settings, and post-deployment validation.
  • Working knowledge of Power BI aggregation concepts, including aggregation tables, storage-mode relationships, query routing considerations, and validation of performance improvement.
  • Full working understanding of permissions management across Fabric and Power BI, including tenant, capacity, workspace, app, item, semantic model, gateway, and data source permission scopes; workspace roles; Build permission; sharing; service principals; security groups; row-level security; object-level security; and least-privilege practices. Ability to administer permissions independently within assigned authority and escalate privileged or tenant-wide changes.
  • Experience leveraging CoPilot AI to assist Power BI Development required. Experience prepping CoPilot agents to interact with Power BI Semantic models a large plus.
  • Experience monitoring and supporting scheduled and on-demand refreshes, gateway connectivity, data source credentials, deployment pipelines, endorsement, lineage, and workspace lifecycle processes.
  • Working knowledge of data warehousing and dimensional modeling concepts, SQL, source-to-report lineage, data quality validation, and enterprise data governance. Familiarity with Microsoft Fabric Lakehouse or Warehouse concepts is strongly preferred.
  • Ability to document solutions and operating procedures, perform peer reviews, support release and change-management activities, and communicate technical trade-offs clearly to business and technical stakeholders.
  • Strong analytical, troubleshooting, customer service, organization, and prioritization skills, with the ability to manage multiple assignments and operate independently on moderately complex work.
