Job Summary

VIZ Media, the world leader in English-language versions of manga and anime (Japanese comics and animation), is looking for a Business Operations Associate to join our Original Publishing team. This is an exciting opportunity for a highly organized and detail-oriented candidate with a passion for publishing to join the Original Publishing team at VIZ Media. The team publishes a range of different formats, including manga, art books, cookbooks and novels.

The Business Operations Associate will report to and assist the Senior Publishing Director, Original Publishing in facilitating the Original Publishing department’s publishing operations, ensuring all information is disseminated appropriately. This position is responsible for updating and maintaining internal databases and trackers, ensuring metadata and sales information is correct, and working closely with Publishing Operations, Publishing Production, Editorial and Sales. In addition, this role will ensure compliance with Licensor submission systems and will be responsible for some contracts administration and support.

What You’ll Do:

  • Gather and deliver all needed metadata and materials required for print and digital publishing distribution and coordinate with Editorial, Publishing Production, and Publishing Operations to ensure data is correct and up-to-date.
  • Navigate internal databases and trackers and communicate updates and changes as required.
  • Provide product information and materials to Sales and Marketing to support seasonal sales windows.
  • Ensure compliance with Licensor submission requirements and system maintenance.
  • Assist the Publishing Director and Editors with submitting contract requests and ongoing contractual negotiations.

In addition to these duties, may perform other duties as assigned.

The Ideal Candidate has:

  • 2+ years of relevant business experience, preferably in an administrative capacity in publishing or relevant industry
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
  • Intermediate experience in Excel, particularly with large datasets
  • Ability to prioritize and balance multiple projects simultaneously and manage time effectively
  • Proactive approach to projects
  • Ability to communicate and interact professionally with culturally diverse clients, vendors, and staff
  • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university, or equivalent experience, with a record that demonstrates suitable preparation for this position

Additional Preferred Experience:

  • Proficiency with Adobe Creative Cloud programs, including InDesign, Photoshop, and Adobe Acrobat
  • Prior experience in publishing
  • Interest in anime and manga

Work Environment & Schedule

Location: The Business Operations Associate position is open to candidates local to the San Francisco Bay Area. This will be a hybrid position with 2 days of work onsite at our downtown San Francisco office expected weekly.

Schedule: This is a Regular Full-Time position (40 hours per week) with core hours of 10 am to 4 pm with some flexibility as needed.

Compensation: $70,000 - $80,000 annually, depending on experience, with additional variable compensation
