Design Engineer
Job description
### About Assembled
Assembled helps companies scale great customer support. As consumers, we’ve all been there. You need help, you’re stuck on hold or going in circles with an AI, and your problem still isn’t solved.
Behind great support is a complex operational problem: thousands of people and AI agents working across teams, time zones, and products as new problems emerge. Assembled gives support leaders the tools to manage that complexity, from AI agents that resolve customer issues to software that forecasts demand, builds schedules, and makes intraday adjustments.
More than 400 companies, including DoorDash, Salesforce, Stripe, and Sephora, trust [Assembled]([external link] We've raised $71M from NEA, Emergence Capital, Stripe, and Basis Set Ventures and have offices in San Francisco, New York, and London.
### About the role
We're looking for a design engineer to lead the next generation of Assembled's design system. You'll define the visual and interaction foundations of our product, building the components, patterns, and design language that help every team ship cohesive, accessible, high-quality experiences faster. You'll shape the foundation that every product team builds on, raising the bar for how the entire product looks, feels, and works as Assembled continues to grow.
This is also a chance to help define what design systems look like in AI-native products. Beyond the system itself, you'll establish the reusable patterns that underpin great agentic UX—how people direct, trust, and collaborate with AI. You’ll also partner closely with our Design Systems Engineer to pioneer AI-assisted ways of designing, building, and evolving the system. It's a role for someone who loves visual craft and systems thinking in equal measure, and gets excited by turning great product decisions into patterns that elevate an entire platform.
This is an onsite role based in our San Francisco office, five days a week (Monday–Friday).
### What you'll own
- Lead the next generation of Assembled's design system. Define the visual language, interaction foundations, components, and patterns that help every product team build cohesive, accessible, high-quality experiences across desktop and mobile.
- Establish how the system evolves. Create the documentation, contribution model, and governance that help designers and engineers adopt the system, extend it thoughtfully, and know when new patterns belong.
- Define reusable interaction patterns for AI-native products. Create reusable interaction patterns for how people direct, trust, review, and collaborate with AI agents, establishing a shared language that scales across our products.
- Pioneer AI-assisted design-system workflows. In partnership with our Design Systems Engineer, use coding agents to generate production-quality UI, understand how components are used, measure adherence, and help teams move from design to implementation faster.
- Extend the system through our hardest product problems. Partner with product teams to rethink data-dense, high-complexity workflows, turning solutions to real enterprise needs into reusable patterns that improve the entire product.
### What excites us
- 4+ years designing and shipping production B2B software, with meaningful ownership of a design system used across multiple teams or products.
- Exceptional visual craft. You have a sharp eye and a high bar, and it shows in everything you ship.
- You love systems thinking as much as craft. You think in primitives and reusable patterns, you sweat how the details add up, and you're driven to see a great decision embedded consistently across an entire product — not just shipped once. You balance simplicity with flexibility as the product grows.
- You’ve built the machinery, not just used it. You have hands-on experience structuring Figma libraries, tokens, variables, components and documentation for use across multiple teams.
- You understand how design systems reach production. You can collaborate fluently with frontend engineers on component APIs, responsive behavior, accessibility, states and implementation tradeoffs—even if you do not write production code yourself.
- You know how to enable other designers. You create systems that are approachable, explain your decisions clearly and help teams apply patterns well without becoming a bottleneck.
- You move quickly. You're biased toward shipping, comfortable with ambiguity, and prefer real user feedback and testing rather than perfecting in isolation.
- You're excited about AI-native design workflows and how a design system can guide and accelerate what both people and agents build.
- You're a strong communicator who collaborates closely with engineering and brings designers, engineers, and leadership along with your thinking.
### Nice to have
- You get into the code (or the tooling). You've used coding or design agents (Cursor, Claude, Figma AI, and whatever comes next) to build, prototype, or ship, and you want to own more of the path from idea to reality.
- Experience instrumenting or measuring design-system adoption/adherence, or running large-scale component migrations.
### Our U.S. benefits
- Generous medical, dental, and vision benefits
- Flexible time off
- Monthly credits for professional development, general wellness, Assembled customers, and commuting
- Paid parental leave
- Catered lunches every day (M–F) and fully stocked SF office
- 401(k) plan enrollment

Customer service teams deserve better. We are a fast-thinking, fast-moving, empathy-driven team inspired by one main goal: to create intelligent systems in service of people helping people. We've started on this path by addressing the very real, very underserved needs of customer support teams. Our story begins with a love of math. Yep. We get a thrill out of helping others solve math problems to unlock human potential. In fact, we believe that the worst customer experiences are usually a result of imbalanced variables, which means not having the right people at the right place at the right time. The best part about this: it’s solvable. And we really love when that happens (BTW, we’re into other things aside from math.) We're backed by the best We’re also lucky to have some amazing individual investors, including Jay Simons (former Atlassian), Jack Altman (CEO, Lattice), Des Traynor (Founder, Intercom), and Alison Pickens (former Gainsight). Challenges we face today They make things harder, but they also motivate us to keep going. Support & Tech = ? Despite its rising importance, customer support tends to be in the shadow of buzzier, trendy technology, but it also means that we get to build a place where only the truly passionate people self-select into. We see what others can't. Seeing the opportunity that others don’t can be daunting. We saw this firsthand at Stripe, and took the lesson with us: hard, non-obvious problems are the most rewarding to solve. Not just selling software. We’re also in the business of showing our customers what superior support looks like. This means we need to give just as much thought to ‘support R&D’ as we do our product roadmap. Your job matters Today's support team carries a massive burden. They are responsible for protecting their company's brand in every single customer interaction, but lack the resources to do this quickly or at scale. They're asked to do more with less — less budget, fewer people, and old-school solutions. The momentum we've seen to date tells us just how much support teams need better tooling, but we've only just started down the path. We still have many miles to travel relative to the total opportunity, which means every person who joins Assembled has massive influence in our journey to transform customer support. What we believe in Or, better stated — here’s how we behave as a team. Our values are inspired by the best support teams, who in turn power the best customer experiences. Act like a support agent. It's a mentality and an operating principle. It means meeting every challenge with rigor, empathy, and efficiency. Doing it because you care. Listening first, solutioning next. Get on the plane. We are biased towards action, and don’t wait to pitch in, help out, or to go the extra mile, every time. Sometimes, you just need to get on the plane — literally and figuratively. Make feedback a gift. The beauty of Assembled is rooted in the interplay of two traits — our diversity of perspectives and backgrounds and our willingness to give and receive feedback. How do I know if I'm a good fit for Assembled? There’s no one kind of person who joins Assembled. In fact, that’s what makes us special — we encourage different perspectives, love untraditional paths, and seek out folks who are “spiky” in something, whether soft skills or technical acumen or anything in between. For us, it’s not just about being good at your job; it’s about bringing something special to the table. There’s also what binds us together. It’s all about channeling the support agent in everything we do — finding answers to tricky questions, bringing positivity to tough situations, lending a hand it’s needed, and listening before acting. Underlying all of this is empathy, for each other and for our customers. We're building a championship team. We're an eclectic mix of ambitious, curious, entrepreneurial, and humble. It's what makes us unique as individuals, and successful as a collective. Above us, we're united by an authentic desire to tackle the worthy problems that no one else sees. Come join us on the ride of a lifetime!
