Functional Description
The Electrical Engineering Technical Director is the senior technical leader for the company's electronics repair and engineering function. This role is both a hands-on technical authority and a people leader: serving as the primary technical voice with customers, shaping the engineering roadmap with failure-mode data, building out repair capabilities as the business takes on new device modalities, and developing the technician team's root-cause troubleshooting skills.
Responsibilities
- Be the senior technical voice with customers. Lead technical reviews, escalations, and executive conversations; present findings and remediation plans with the polish expected of a director and represent the company's engineering credibility on every call.
- Shape the engineering roadmap. Bring failure-mode data into R&D decisions, with a strong voice in which device classes and board families we reverse-engineer next and how we sequence them.
- Own the buildout of repair capabilities for new modalities. Take a new modality from evaluation to production readiness — failure-mode characterization, parts and tooling sourcing, test and validation procedures, technician training, and the documentation the bench needs to run at volume.
- Coach the team on root-cause failure analysis and recommend where skills and capacity need to grow.
Qualifications
Required qualifications include:
- 10+ years of electrical engineering experience with complex electronic systems and instrumentation,
- Proven experience leading electronics repair teams
- Hands-on bench technician skills, with the ability to stay active in day-to-day repair work
- Deep troubleshooting ability at the board and component level
- Able to work from incomplete or limited documentation
- Experience checking completed repairs against original design specifications
- Strong communication skills, able to work well with production floor staff
- Creditable and confident presenting to a customer’s senior technical staff
Preferred Experience
- Experience with regulated or safety-critical hardware and formal test documentation.
- BSEE or equivalent, with demonstrated experience in analog, power, and mixed-signal circuit design or repair.
- Skilled in SMT and through-hole rework, BGA reballing, and precision soldering.
- Deeply familiar with common failure modes and repair tactics for imaging technology, including reverse engineering from limited or no OEM documentation.
- Track record building and managing an electronics repair or production team — hiring, mentoring, and holding a bench to a quality standard.
- Prior director- or manager-level ownership of repair, manufacturing, or service engineering operation, including throughput and quality metrics.
Environmental and Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift 75 pounds
- Ability to stand for long periods of time
- Ability to travel, both domestically and internationally, for extended periods of time
- Dexterous ability to manipulate small objects
- Willing to work standard and non-standard hours as required to support the customers
