Facilities Manager
Job description
Voya Energy is commercializing a groundbreaking metal-based fuel to rapidly deploy reliable, clean, affordable electricity anywhere on Earth. Our breakthrough technology allows us to convert abundant, high-energy, recycled metals into a powerful, safe, durable fuel. We are also creating a foundational new category of energy generation devices, delivering fast access to power, free from the limitations of the grid. We are assembling a highly-experienced team of visionary founders, tenacious researchers, multi-disciplinary first principles engineers, battle-tested operators and world-class investors to deliver on Voya's ambitious mission. Join us in fueling our electric future.
Position Summary
Voya is moving into a new headquarters in Hayward, California. The building is being built out now as a blank slate, and we are hiring our first Facilities Manager to help shape it, lead a successful move-in, and build the facilities function for the next stage of company growth.
You will work with every team at Voya, from chemistry and engineering R&D to build and test, fabrication, and the power electronics lab, to make sure they can use the space efficiently and safely to advance our core technology. As the company grows, you will own the broad range of work that keeps the site running: building systems and the subcontractors who modify them, shipping and receiving, inventory, and the new needs that come up along the way.
This is a hands-on role for someone who is as comfortable walking an inspection with the fire marshal as they are troubleshooting a compressor. The systems, processes, and infrastructure you put in place will directly affect the speed, safety, and effectiveness of our R&D organization.
Responsibilities
- Space & Team Support: Partner with each team to plan, lay out, and adapt their work areas, utilities, and equipment so the space supports their work efficiently and safely.
- Building & Process Systems: Own HVAC, compressed air, ultrapure water, exhaust, electrical, and other critical utilities. Hire and manage subcontractors to modify and expand building systems as needs change, and establish preventive maintenance programs.
- Safety & Compliance: Help establish Voya’s Environment, Health & Safety (EHS) program with external consultants and internal teams. Own permits and inspections with the city building department and fire marshal, and keep the site safe and inspection-ready.
- Shipping, Receiving & Inventory: Run shipping and receiving, including hazardous materials. Set up and manage inventory for raw materials, chemicals, gases, and consumables.
- Labs, Shop & Warehouse: Build and maintain gas and chemical storage, shop equipment utilities, forklifts, and racking.
- Vendors & Services: Manage contractors, service providers, the landlord, and building services such as access control and security.
- Planning & Growth: Manage the facilities budget, plan space and infrastructure for 2027 growth, and take ownership of new operational needs as the company scales.
Qualifications
- 5+ years of experience in facilities management, facilities engineering, or a related role, ideally in an R&D, manufacturing, laboratory, hardware, or industrial environment.
- You’ve set up and run new facilities or programs before, ideally including a build-out or move-in.
- Hands-on experience with building and process systems. Can troubleshoot equipment and read MEP and construction drawings; P&ID familiarity and forklift certification are a plus.
- Experience with hazardous materials (gases, corrosives, flammables) and with building or running EHS programs: Cal/OSHA, CUPA/HMBP, hazardous waste, fire code. DOT hazmat shipping experience is a plus.
- Experience setting up shipping, receiving, and inventory systems.
- Strong vendor management: you scope work, compare quotes, and hold contractors to schedule and budget.
- Chemical or energy industry background strongly preferred.
- Thrives in a fast-paced startup environment and is comfortable taking ownership of whatever needs an owner.
Location: Hayward, CA. Full-time onsite.
What we offer
- Competitive salary and equity compensation commensurate with experience
- Unlimited PTO
- 100% employer paid medical, dental, and vision coverage
- 401(k) plan
