Job description

The Field Operations Manager is responsible for overseeing all field erection activities related to structural steel and miscellaneous metals. This position manages the daily operations and performance of the Structural Ironworking and Miscellaneous Metals teams to ensure safe, timely, and quality execution of work.

Key Responsibilities

Leadership & Supervision

  • Directly manage field superintendents, foremen, leadmen, and ironworker crews.
  • Assign crews and coordinate manpower needs to meet project demands.
  • Act as the point of contact for field execution issues, resolving conflicts and ensuring productivity.
  • Foster a culture of teamwork, accountability, safety, and continuous improvement.

Project Execution & Oversight

  • Oversee steel erection operations across multiple job sites ensuring adherence to construction documents, project schedules, and quality requirements.
  • Conduct job site visits regularly to assess progress, address challenges, and support site teams.
  • Develop, review and ensure compliance with erection plans, lift plans, and sequencing strategies.
  • Apply knowledge of AISC (American Institute of Steel Construction), PCI (Precast/Prestressed Concrete Institute), AWS (American Welding Society), SDI (Steel Deck Institute), and SJI (Steel Joist Institute) standards during planning and execution.

Safety & Compliance

  • Ensure all field operations comply with OSHA regulations, company safety policies, and job/client-specific safety requirements and plans.
  • Lead and participate in safety audits, job hazard analyses, and incident investigations.
  • Promote proactive safety behavior through regular safety meetings, training, and enforcement.

Labor & Equipment Management

  • Forecast labor needs and coordinate staffing and recruitment.
  • Support training, certification, and development of ironworkers and field personnel.
  • Ensure proper selection, deployment, and maintenance of erection equipment and tools.

Communication & Reporting

  • Provide regular updates and reports on job progress, labor performance, and safety metrics.
  • Support preconstruction efforts by contributing erection expertise, logistics planning, and risk assessment.
  • Collaborate with internal teams to maintain alignment on project goals, resource planning, and issue resolution.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 7 years of progressive experience in steel erection, including at least 3 years in a field management role.
  • In-depth understanding and application of AISC, PCI, AWS, SDI, and SJI standards in steel erection, welding, decking, and joist installation.
  • Strong knowledge of steel erection practices, rigging, crane operations, and site logistics.
  • Proficient in reading and interpreting structural drawings, erection plans, and specifications.
  • OSHA 30 certification required; additional certifications (e.g., rigging, signalperson, CPR/First Aid) preferred.
  • Valid Driver's License required.
  • Excellent communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to travel regularly to job sites and work extended hours when required.
