Position Description:
The Gallery Manager oversees Work of Art Gallery and Studios, supervises assigned staff, and provides direction, training, and support to ensure quality gallery, studio, workshops, events, sales, artist support, and case management operations. The Gallery Manager ensures compliance with Work of Art and Southside Unlimited policies and works with leadership to address staffing and program needs. This is a variable-schedule position requiring regular business hours in addition to evenings and weekends for events, workshops, exhibitions, and meetings.

Responsibilities
- Program Operations
- Participate with staff, artists, and Assigned Program Director in the evaluation and revision of daily operations to meet changing artist needs.
- In conjunction with Assigned Program Director and Case Manager, receive and screen referrals for potential artist placements into the program.
- Train and oversee Case Manager to write and facilitate artist’s Individual Service Plans, and implement ISP goals.
- Train and oversee Case Manager on Person Centered Plan (PCP) sequence and ensure all PCP’s are completed thoroughly and thoughtfully.
- Oversee attendance and make Alta California Regional Center Purchase of Service (POS) requests to match Alta funded artist needs and studio availability.
- Schedule Work of Art Studios and Gallery staff working hours, review and approve or deny vacation requests and personal leaves, taking into account artist and program priorities.
- Review and correct timecard entries following SSU protocols, and submit timesheets for payroll by payroll due dates.
- Train and oversee Gallery and Workshop Coordinator to coordinate events, workshops, classes, gallery sales, marketing efforts, and community engagement activities.
- Collaborate with Instructors to develop class and workshop curriculum, coordinate curriculum approval with the Assigned Program Director, and work with the Gallery and Workshop Coordinator to schedule approved offerings.
- Coordinate with Instructors to review purchase orders and to purchase studio supplies within studio budget parameters.
- Conduct and submit yearly staff evaluations in conjunction with the Assigned Program Director.
- Be familiar with Southside Unlimited policy manual and its implementation with staff and artists.
- Communicate expectations clearly to staff and artists, addressing performance issues using assertive communication.
- Write timely manager’s notes when providing staff feedback, setting expectations and corrective actions.
- Meet weekly with the Assigned Program Director to provide updates on program development, artists, Gallery and Studio operations, marketing, upcoming events, and quality assurance matters.
- Facilitate and lead weekly Work of Art Studio staff meetings and daily schedule meetings while promoting team building and studio continuity.
- Develop and coordinate staff training focused on supporting artistic growth, self-advocacy, self-actualization, and job development.
- In conjunction with the Assigned Program Director, screen and interview applicants for open staff positions. Ensure completion of all onboarding steps, including new hire training.
- Other duties as requested by the Assigned Program Director.
Support and Training for Studio
- Have the technical skills necessary to instruct artists in all relevant studio media and substitute for absent Art staff as needed.
- In conjunction with Assigned Program Director, provide assistance with commissioned art development, production, and placement.
- Encourage self-advocacy within the studio.
- Assess individual artist needs and support progress toward self-sufficiency.
- Promote self-critiquing and peer-critiquing of art in a positive manner.
- Help artists expand their individual artistic and expressive talents while working with Instructors to develop new curriculum to inspire artists.
- Focus on artistic techniques that will make artists more successful in their art endeavors.
- Intervene in crisis situations by assessing the emergency; prioritizing the needs of the person and acting in a way that respects the dignity of the artist involved while attending to the crisis situation at hand.
- Keep the studio area clean, orderly, safe and accessible to all artists.
- Know how to use and maintain a kiln if applicable.
Support and Training to ACRC Funded Artists
- Promote the development of artist self-esteem and problem solving by working individually with artists to achieve their ISP goals.
- Ensure job and task analyses are accurate and used by staff when supporting artists working in the Gallery.
- Train Gallery and Workshop Coordinator to work with artists to learn gallery operations, customer service, workplace skills, and professional art practices.
- Complete assessment tools necessary to determine individual artist needs.
- Complete and/or support Case Manager to complete all required reporting in a timely manner, including SIR’s, APS Report, etc.
- Network as needed with participant support systems including Regional Center staff, residential staff, program staff, other day program staff, and participant advocacy groups.
- Attend artist planning team meetings as needed.
Community and Gallery Relations
- Educate the general public about the talents and abilities of people with developmental disabilities.
- Network with other professionals in the art field.
- Consult with the Assigned Program Director on development of public art projects.
- Oversee development and maintenance of community art shows in conjunction with the Gallery and Workshop Coordinator including transporting and displaying artwork.
- Find community galleries and art shows to display artwork.
- Obtain Art staff and artist input and knowledge in marketing artwork.
- Oversee studios’ social media profiles in cooperation with the Gallery and Workshop Coordinator.
- Oversee management of the Work of Art Gallery in cooperation with the Assigned Program Director and Gallery and Workshop Coordinator.
- Train staff and selling artists on sales and customer service policies.
- Oversee and train Gallery and Workshop Coordinator in public outreach for workshops, classes and open studios including creating and disseminating marketing materials.
- With Gallery and Workshop Coordinator, manage schedule of workshops, classes and open studio.
- Communicate issues to the Assigned Program Director in a timely manner.
- Be familiar with the Work of Art Studio Use Agreement and its implementation.
- Collaborate with the Gallery and Workshop Coordinator to calculate daily sales, create monthly reports and verify for accuracy. Submit cash sales to Accounting Director.
- Manage gallery committee process to ensure regular rotation of art in gallery. Ensure all artwork is in inventory and clearly labeled.
- Report observed and needed repairs or maintenance for the gallery to the Operations Manager and Assigned Program Director.
- Report office and janitorial supplies needed for gallery or programs to the Operations Manager.
- Submit all paperwork and follow through on assigned deadlines in a timely manner.
Professional Training and Development
- Participate in meetings as directed.
- Attend required training.
- Maintain CPR/First Aid Certification.
- Stay current on best practices in your field of expertise.

Applicant Requirements
- BA or MA degree in the Art, Music, Performing Arts, or related field (may substitute skill level for education).
- A.A. Degree in Human Services related field or at least three years’ experience in the field of developmental disabilities.
- Professionally recognized practicing artist with previous teaching experience.
- Proficiencies in ceramics, painting, drawing, or relevant art subjects for the assigned gallery and studio space.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills.
- Possesses skills to use computers and the internet to email, scan, present, and file reports or other needed documentation.
- Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite programs (Word, Excel, etc.).
- Proficient in basic design.
- Possession of a valid driver’s license and proof of current auto insurance and possession of a reliable car.
- Ability to adhere to strict drug free workplace policy.
