Job Responsibilities
: The Mobile Unit Driver is responsible for the safe and reliable operation of the Mobile Medical Unit throughout DeKalb County and surrounding service areas as assigned. This position ensures the mobile unit, equipment, supplies, and onboard systems are operationally ready, clean, safe, and properly maintained before, during, and after community events and scheduled service activities.
The Mobile Unit Driver supports the successful delivery of mobile public health services by safely transporting the vehicle, staff, equipment, and supplies to assigned locations; conducting required vehicle and equipment inspections; maintaining inventory and cleanliness; completing required travel and mileage documentation; and responding appropriately to operational or emergency situations within the scope of assigned responsibilities.
The position requires sound judgment, attention to safety and detail, dependability, excellent customer service, and the ability to work collaboratively with clinical, administrative, and program staff in a mobile community-based environment.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Mobile Unit Operation and Transportation
- Safely operates and drives the Mobile Medical Unit throughout DeKalb County and other assigned locations as required.
- Maintains a valid Georgia driver's license and operates the vehicle in accordance with applicable traffic laws, regulations, and organizational policies.
- Demonstrates the ability, competence, and confidence to safely operate a large mobile medical vehicle as a routine responsibility.
- Reads maps, follows assigned routes, estimates travel times, and adjusts routes as needed based on schedules, traffic, weather, or operational conditions.
- Safely transports staff, equipment, supplies, and other authorized materials.
- Maintains required mileage, travel, vehicle, and activity logs and prepare related reports.
- Perform pre-trip and post-trip inspections before and after each route, scheduled event, or assigned activity.
Vehicle and Mobile Unit Readiness
- Maintains the mobile unit in a clean, safe, mechanically sound, and operational condition.
- Performs routine operational checks, including fluid levels, tire pressure, lights, batteries, generators, HVAC systems, and other vehicle or onboard systems.
- Checks onboard medical equipment and reports identified operational concerns to the appropriate supervisor or program staff.
- Identifies and promptly reports mechanical, electrical, safety, or maintenance concerns.
- Coordinates vehicle maintenance and service with Internal Services or approved vendors as directed.
- Maintains appropriate fuel levels and ensures the mobile unit is prepared for scheduled activities.
- Maintains cleanliness and readiness before, during, and after community visits and events.
- Maintains appropriate inventory of supplies and reports shortages or damaged items.
- Performs routine filling and dumping of potable water and graywater holding tanks in accordance with applicable safety, sanitation, and public health requirements.
Safety and Emergency Response
- Complying with all applicable traffic laws, safety requirements, infection prevention practices, sanitation requirements, and organizational policies.
- Advocates for participant, staff, and public safety as a routine component of daily operations.
- Responds appropriately to emergency situations and takes independent action within the scope of assigned responsibilities until appropriate professional assistance is available.
- Identifies and communicates potential safety hazards, vehicle concerns, equipment issues, or environmental conditions that may affect operations.
- Use appropriate precautions when loading, unloading, transporting, or positioning equipment and supplies.
- Supports safe setup and breakdown of the mobile unit at community locations.
Community Service and Participant Experience
- Provides courteous, professional, and respectful customer service to participants, community members, staff, partners, and other stakeholders.
- Supports a positive participant experience while the mobile unit is operating at community locations.
- Represents DeKalb Public Health professionally while operating the mobile unit and interacting with the public.
- Responds appropriately to participant and community questions within the scope of the position and refers clinical or program-specific questions to appropriate staff.
- Promotes a safe, welcoming, and respectful environment for individuals from diverse backgrounds.
Administrative and Operational Support
- Follows instructions and operational guidance provided by the supervisor, coordinator, manager, and designated program leadership.
- Attend monthly staff meetings and other required meetings or training courses.
- Loads and unloads equipment and supplies as assigned and in accordance with safe lifting practices.
- Maintains required documentation, logs, reports, and records accurately and timely.
- Assists with setup, breakdown, and operational support for community events and mobile health activities.
- Works an adjusted schedule as required to support community events, including evenings and weekends.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Collaboration & Communication
- Collaborates with clinical staff, program coordinators, supervisors, managers, administrative staff, and other team members to ensure the mobile unit is ready for scheduled activities.
- Communicates vehicle, equipment, supply, maintenance, safety, scheduling, or operational concerns promptly to the appropriate supervisor or designated staff.
- Coordinates with Internal Services, approved vendors, community partners, and event contacts as directed.
- Communicates effectively regarding route schedules, arrival times, vehicle readiness, setup requirements, and operational needs.
- Provides timely updates when delays, route changes, vehicle issues, weather conditions, or other circumstances may affect scheduled activities.
- Uses professional, respectful, and customer-focused communication when interacting with participants, community members, staff, and external partners.
- Understands when an issue can be handled independently and when it should be escalated to a supervisor or other appropriate resource.

Working Environment
- Work is performed primarily in and around a Mobile Medical Unit operating at health centers, community locations, outreach events, public facilities, and other assigned sites throughout DeKalb County.
- Work requires frequent driving and may involve varying traffic, weather, road, parking, and environmental conditions.
- Position requires frequent entering and exiting the mobile unit, walking, standing, sitting, climbing stairs, squatting, reaching, bending, pushing, pulling, lifting, and carrying equipment and supplies.
- May be required to work in varying indoor and outdoor environments and under changing weather conditions.
- May encounter crowded community events, varying noise levels, uneven surfaces, and other environmental conditions associated with mobile community operations.
- May involve exposure to medical environments, potentially infectious materials, cleaning and disinfecting products, and other public health-related hazards; appropriate safety and infection-control practices must be followed.
- Requires occasional lifting and carrying of equipment and supplies weighing up to approximately 50–55 pounds and pushing or pulling equipment weighing up to approximately 50 pounds.
- Requires the ability to maintain balance and safely navigate stairs and other access points to and from the mobile unit.
- Work may require adjusted schedules, including evenings, weekends, extended hours, or changes in scheduled locations based on community events and program needs.
- May be required to respond to unexpected operational, emergency, or public health situations with limited advance notice.
- Work requires sustained attention to vehicle operation, safety, route navigation, equipment readiness, and operational details.
- Position requires the ability to work independently while maintaining communication and coordination with the broader mobile health team.
Physical Requirements
- Sits, stands, and walks intermittently throughout the workday.
- Squats or kneels and lifts objects from the ground as needed.
- Climbs stairs to enter and exit the mobile unit.
- Reaches and extends arms above the head and in front of the body.
- Frequently lift objects weighing up to 10 pounds.
- Occasionally lifts objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
- Occasionally carry objects weighing up to 55 pounds.
- Pushes and pull objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
- Maintains sufficient balance and mobility to safely perform required duties.
Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- At least five (5) years of directly related professional driving, transportation, mobile-unit operations, logistics, or closely related experience, as required by the classification.
- Must possess a good driving record.
- Must possess or be able to obtain the required Georgia Class C driver's license/vehicle operator credential within the required timeframe.
- Must be able to safely operate the Mobile Medical Unit and perform all essential driving and operational duties.
- Must be able to meet the physical requirements of the position, with or without reasonable accommodation.
- Must be willing and able to work adjusted schedules, including evenings and weekends, based on community events and program needs.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience operating a large vehicle, mobile clinic, mobile medical unit, recreational vehicle, bus, commercial vehicle, or similar equipment.
- Experience working in public health, healthcare, community outreach, government, or a customer-facing environment.
- Experience performing vehicle inspections, preventive maintenance checks, inventory management, or equipment readiness activities.
- Experience supporting mobile/community-based services or outreach events.
- Experience transporting and handling medical, public health, or specialized equipment.
- Knowledge of DeKalb County or other local community service areas.
- Experience maintaining mileage, travel, vehicle maintenance, inventory, or operational records.
- Experience working with diverse populations and providing professional customer service.
- Basic knowledge of workplace safety, sanitation, infection prevention, and emergency procedures.
Other Duties as Assigned
Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned to support the mission and operational needs of DeKalb Public Health.Additional Information
