JOB TITLE

Low Voltage/Network Technician

JOB DESCRIPTION SUMMARY

The Low Voltage/Network Technician serves as a core member of the IT Infrastructure team, reporting to the Director of IT Infrastructure Services. This hands-on role is focused on the installation, termination, testing, and maintenance of the University's low-voltage and network infrastructure, including Category 6/6A copper and fiber optic cabling, wireless access points, security cameras, network switches, and related equipment. The technician leads installation work with the team's student workers, ensures every job meets industry standards and University specifications, and partners with Network Engineers on deployments and strategic projects. The technician also supports ITS auxiliary services, such as residence halls, dining, and external partnerships.

This role is ideal for a skilled, self-motivated, and hard-working installer who takes pride in clean, organized, and well-documented work. A positive attitude, a commitment to seeing tasks through to completion, and the ability to lead and teach others on the job are essential. If you hold a low-voltage certification, or are eager to earn one, and want to grow your skills in structured cabling, fiber optics, and network infrastructure, this position offers significant opportunity to make a tangible impact across the University and beyond.

JOB DESCRIPTION

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Install, route, terminate, label, and test Category 6/6A copper cabling systems, including pathways, supports, patch panels, jacks, and cable management, in accordance with TIA standards and University specifications.
  • Install, splice, terminate, and test single-mode and multimode fiber optic cabling for backbone and building-to-building connections, including fusion splicing, connectorization, and OTDR and optical loss testing.
  • Install and deploy network and low-voltage devices, including wireless access points, indoor and outdoor cameras, network switches, racks, and battery backups (UPS), ensuring proper weatherproofing, grounding, and bonding.
  • Lead student workers on installation projects and daily operations by assigning tasks, training them on proper techniques and safety practices, and reviewing their work for quality and standards compliance.
  • Respond to service requests and incidents involving cabling, connectivity, and installed devices; trace, troubleshoot, and repair physical-layer issues. Participate in a rotating on-call schedule to respond to after-hours incidents and outages.
  • Create and maintain documentation, including as-built drawings, labeling, test results, and rack elevations. Assist with project estimates, material lists, and coordination with contractors, vendors, and customers.
  • Perform low-voltage and network installations, moves, and repairs delivered through ITS auxiliary operations, such as residence halls, dining, and external partnerships, coordinating work with customers and vendors.
  • Obtain and maintain required low-voltage certification(s). Proactively pursue opportunities to learn new systems and technologies, share knowledge, and partner with team members to enhance departmental expertise.
