Job description
Position Summary
This position works under the direction of the Shelby County Controller and is responsible for managing the daily operations of the accounting cycle as well as supporting the Annual Comprehensive Financial Report.
Pay Grade: 56
Salary Commensurate with Experience and Education
Minimum Qualifications
- Five (5) years of experience performing accounting duties or similar financial tasks; AND
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in accounting, finance or
- business administration.
- An equivalent combination of related education and/or experience.
- Experience working in a large corporate, governmental or nonprofit organization is preferred.
- Governmental financial certifications or CPA Required. Certification may substitute for 2 years of experience.
- PROOF OF EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND/OR EXPERIENCE IS REQUIRED.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Supervises monthly closing process with adherence to time allotments.
- Leads in preparation of the Annual Comprehensive Financial Report and Grant Activity Reports.
- Oversees Chart of Accounts and Cost Allocation Studies.
- Participates in the preparation of monthly and annual financial statements.
- Assists reviewing and analyzing monthly reports for all funds and departments.
- Ensures proper reporting of the general ledger, fixed assets inventory, insurance liability, and other related central accounting functions.
- Assist with researching and advising on financial matters.
- Remains current on new and existing governmental generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP).
- Provides direction and assistance to staff and departments regarding new accounting codes
- and sections.
- Performs other related duties as required or directed.
KSAs
- Knowledge of and demonstrated ability in applying generally accepted accounting principles and practices issued by the Governmental Accounting Standards Board and the American Institute of CPAs.
- Ability to supervise and work cooperatively with others.
- Must have excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Ability to review and analyze budgets, financial reports and cost analyses.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word, and experience with a large-scale ERP or financial software required; strong preference for Oracle experience.
