Job description

This position will develop workflows and tools and utilize best practices to ensure that all material in foreign languages including but not limited to course content, student communications, marketing materials, and institutional resources are presented with precision, cultural sensitivity, and is consistent with the revealed principles of the gospel.

The Translation & Localization Manager will be responsible for supporting the Multi-Language Program in extending BYU-Pathway Worldwide educational program to individuals in their native languages.

1. Leadership & Strategy

  • Support the Director of Multi-Llanguage Program in defining the long-term vision, goals, and roadmap for translation and localization within BYU-Pathway Worldwide.
  • Collaborate in the creation and maintenance of strategies that align with institutional objectives and Church standards.
  • Propose measurable goals for quality, cost efficiency, and turnaround time.
  • Work in partnership with other CES institutions to maintain a consistent vocabulary throughout all languages that are presented through BYU-Pathway Worldwide programs.

2. Workflow Development

  • Design, document, and maintain an end-to-end translation workflow, including assignment, translation, review, quality assurance, and release.
  • Promote standards across departments (i.e.: Curriculum, Communications, Technology, Field Operations, Finance, and Student Success, …etc.).
  • Facilitate the integration of translation management into all systems and other internal tools.

3. Team Building & Management

  • Recruit, train, and mentor translators, reviewers, and linguists either as external contractors or internal members of the Translations & Localization team.
  • Create accountability structures, KPIs, and quality control checkpoints.
  • Manage with empathy, clarity, and alignment with BYU-Pathway’s Christ-centered culture and respective leadership.

4. Technology & Tools

  • Evaluate and implement a Translation Management System (TMS) and Computer-Assisted Translation (CAT) tools.
  • Oversee term base, style guides, and translation memory (TM) maintenance.
  • Coordinate with MLP technical support (ICS) to ensure technical integration with existing systems.

5. Quality Assurance & Compliance

  • Implement a Linguistic Quality Assurance (LQA) process.
  • Emphasize adherence to gospel principles and institutional tone.
  • Conduct audits and back-translations as needed for sensitive or high-visibility content.

6. Cross-Departmental Collaboration

  • Partner with all departments of BYU-PW to identify translation priorities.
  • Work in partnership with other CES units that impact BYU-PW’s program.
  • Act as a liaison between BYU-Pathway and Church Translation teams to ensure harmony in terminology, policy, and cultural adaptation.

7. Budget & Resource Management

  • Manage annual translation budgets, including independent contractors and licenses.
  • Prepare and present to Director of Multi-Language Program quarterly cost forecasts and process efficiency reports.
  • Advocate for accurate, responsive, responsible, and scalable resource management and allocation.

8. Reporting & Continuous Improvement

  • Present quarterly reports and process improvement plans to Director of MLP.
  • Promote a culture of checks and balances with feedback, documentation, and continual refinement.

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Translation, Linguistics, Communications, or related field.
  • 5+ years of professional experience in academics with translation & localization management, or related management roles.
  • Fluency in English and at least two additional languages (Portuguese, Spanish, or French).
  • Experience using TMS/CAT tools and managing translation memories, term bases, and glossaries.
  • Experience in translating and localizing academic material of higher education and/or supporting the translation initiative by auditing translated content, revising previously approved translations.

Highly Regarded Qualifications

  • Higher education in Translation, Linguistics, or Localization Management (Master’s degree minimum).
  • Familiarity with machine translation + post-editing workflows.
  • Able and willing to travel sporadically. Both domestically and internationally.
  • Proven record in process design, documentation, and quality metrics.
  • Must lead with kindness and in a collaborative manner, in cross-functional, multicultural contexts.
  • Understands and relates to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints tone of communication.
