TITLE: Media Sales Manager

DEPARTMENT: Publications

PAY RANGE: $80,000 - $95,000 per year

BONUS: 10% bonus potential based upon achievement of defined goals

401(K): 3% automatic safe-harbor match plus 80% elective deferral match of the first 5% contributed by the employee

SCHEDULE: Hybrid work schedule – First 90 Days, in the office Monday -Thursday, Friday remote. Then 2 Days in the office, 3 Days Remote.

SUMMARY

The Media Sales Manager is responsible for driving advertising revenue growth across SME's print and digital media portfolio, including Mining Engineering Magazine, Mining Engineering Online, Tunneling & Underground Construction (T&UC), digital advertising products, conference publications, directories, and emerging media offerings. This position develops and executes strategic sales plans, cultivates new business opportunities, expands existing advertiser relationships, manages contract sales representatives, and achieves annual revenue objectives.

The Media Sales Manager serves as a key revenue leader responsible for growing advertising sales, expanding market share, increasing advertiser retention, developing innovative media solutions, and maximizing the value of SME's media properties.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Strategic Sales Leadership & Revenue Growth

  • Responsible for all print and digital media advertising sales for Mining Engineering Magazine, Mining Engineering Online, Tunneling & Underground Construction, T&UC Online, conference show guides, the Products & Services Directory, MiningDirectory.org, programmatic services, and future advertising products.
  • Maintain full P&L responsibility for advertising revenue and achievement of monthly, quarterly, and annual revenue goals.
  • Develop and execute annual sales strategies, business plans, and revenue growth initiatives aligned with organizational objectives.
  • Establish annual customer retention and account growth strategies.
  • Monitor key sales performance indicators and implement corrective actions as necessary to achieve revenue objectives.
  • Develop, implement, and continuously refine sales action plans to support business growth.
  • Identify emerging market opportunities and recommend new revenue-generating products and services.

Sales Team Leadership

  • Establish sales goals, performance expectations, and accountability measures for sales representatives.
  • Conduct regular sales meetings, pipeline reviews, and forecasting discussions.
  • Collaborate with representatives on strategic account planning and proposal development.
  • Monitor and evaluate representative performance against established revenue targets.
  • Recruit, onboard, train, coach, and manage contract advertising sales representatives.
  • Provide ongoing coaching, guidance, and support to maximize sales effectiveness.

Integrated Advertising Solutions

  • Collaborate with Meetings, Marketing, Sponsorship, Exhibits, Membership, and other departments to develop strategic advertising programs and bundled offerings.
  • Design innovative advertising products, promotional campaigns, and rate structures.
  • Develop customer-focused solutions that maximize advertiser value and organizational revenue.

Revenue Forecasting, Reporting & Business Analytics

  • Develop and maintain monthly, quarterly, and annual revenue forecasts.
  • Prepare weekly, monthly, and quarterly sales reports and dashboards for leadership.
  • Analyze sales performance, market trends, advertiser activity, and competitive intelligence.
  • Evaluate account retention, campaign performance, and product profitability.
  • Present sales performance, forecasts, opportunities, and recommendations to stakeholders.
  • Conduct business analyses on proposed advertising products and prepare business cases as appropriate.

Account Management & Operational Support

  • Serve as the primary relationship manager for key and strategic advertising accounts.
  • Develop a deep understanding of advertiser business goals and recommend advertising solutions.
  • Identify cross-selling and upselling opportunities across SME media, events, exhibits, sponsorships, and educational offerings.
  • Ensure high levels of advertiser satisfaction, retention, and renewal.
  • Respond promptly to advertising inquiries and develop compelling proposals that address customer objectives.
  • Resolve escalated advertiser concerns and maintain strong long-term client relationships.
  • Maintain accurate customer, account, sales activity, and forecasting information within CRM and advertising management systems.
  • Assist with collections activities and participate in aging reviews to support timely account resolution.
  • Maintain, update, and manage listings on MiningDirectory.org.
  • Ensure advertising materials, customer data, and campaign information remain accurate and current.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Industry Research & Market Development

  • Stay informed regarding industry, advertising, and media trends.
  • Conduct competitive analysis and benchmarking of industry publications and advertising offerings.
  • Review advertising and editorial content of competitive publications.
  • Interpret market research and customer feedback to identify growth opportunities.
  • Recommend new products, services, and enhancements that strengthen SME's media portfolio.
  • Develop strategies to expand SME's market presence and advertiser engagement.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Manage contract advertising sales representatives.
  • Provide leadership, coaching, performance management, and accountability for assigned sales resources.
  • Support recruiting, onboarding, training, and development activities related to advertising sales personnel.

REQUIRED EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor's degree in Business, Marketing, Communications, Journalism, or a related field.
  • Minimum five (5) years of progressive advertising sales, media sales, marketing, or business development experience.
  • Proven track record of meeting or exceeding revenue targets.
  • Minimum three (3) years of sales leadership experience, including managing employees, contractors, or outside sales representatives.
  • Demonstrated experience selling digital and/or print advertising, with an emphasis on digital media sales.
  • Experience developing sales forecasts, budgets, and performance metrics.
  • Experience negotiating advertising contracts and strategic partnerships.
  • Familiarity with advertising management and CRM platforms.

PREFERRED EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

  • Experience in association, trade publication, engineering, industrial, construction, mining, or technical media environments.
  • Experience developing integrated advertising packages.
  • Knowledge of Google Analytics, SEO, digital advertising metrics, and campaign optimization.
  • Experience with audience targeting, retargeting, geofencing, and programmatic advertising.
  • Experience with Ad Orbit, Ad Butler, or similar advertising management systems.
  • Prior outside sales or cold-calling experience.

TRAVEL

Occasional travel is required. Travel may include industry conferences, trade shows, customer meetings, and other business-related events.
