Position Summary

The Pilot Driver (Escort Vehicle Operator) is responsible for safely escorting oversized, overweight, and specialized haul vehicles to and from project locations. This position helps ensure compliance with federal, state, and local transportation regulations while protecting the public, company employees, equipment, and property. The Pilot Driver serves as a critical communication link between transport drivers, project personnel, and the traveling public while promoting safe and efficient transport operations.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Escort oversized and overweight loads using an approved escort vehicle.
  • Lead or follow transport vehicles as required by permits and applicable state regulations.
  • Communicate effectively with transport drivers using two-way radios regarding traffic conditions, road hazards, construction zones, route changes, and low-clearance obstacles.
  • Monitor route conditions and assist with navigation along permit-approved travel routes.
  • Install, inspect, and maintain required escort vehicle signs, flags, lights, radios, and safety equipment.
  • Conduct pre-trip and post-trip vehicle inspections and document findings.
  • Assist with load securement inspections prior to transport.
  • Coordinate safe lane changes, turns, intersections, and other traffic movements involving oversized loads.
  • Maintain transportation logs, permits, inspection records, and required documentation.
  • Respond appropriately to emergencies, traffic incidents, breakdowns, or changing roadway conditions.
  • Interact professionally with law enforcement agencies, permit officials, utility companies, project personnel, and the general public.
  • Comply with all company policies, transportation regulations, permit requirements, and safety procedures.
  • Participate in safety meetings, training programs, and continuing education as required.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned to support transportation and construction operations.

Work Environment

  • Frequent travel throughout project locations and transportation routes.
  • Exposure to traffic, construction zones, heavy equipment operations, dust, noise, and varying weather conditions.
  • May require early mornings, evenings, weekends, holidays, overnight travel, and extended work hours based on transportation schedules and project needs.

Conditions of Employment

  • Must maintain a valid driver's license throughout employment.
  • Must remain eligible for coverage under the Company's automobile insurance policy at all times.
  • Must pass and maintain acceptable Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) standards as determined by company insurance requirements.
  • Failure to maintain an acceptable driving record, driver's license, insurance eligibility, or required certifications may result in removal from driving duties, reassignment, or disciplinary action up to and including termination.

  • Ensure compliance with all escort permit requirements and transportation regulations.
  • Promptly report hazards, incidents, accidents, and route concerns.
  • Demonstrate professionalism when representing Doss Enterprises.

  • Contribute to safe, efficient, and successful transportation operations.
