Job description

Product Designer

Onyx Bio — Berkeley, CA (On-site)

Company Overview

Onyx is a research collective building a virtual immune system — a model of how real people respond to infection, inflammation, and treatment. Every person who joins adds to it, helping researchers understand immune disease more deeply and build the next generation of precision medicines faster and more safely.

Position Overview

As Product Designer at Onyx, you’ll own the design of our AI-native clinical research platform, from improving existing features to creating entirely new workflows.

You’ll work closely with founders, engineers, and clinical research teams to understand complex operational problems and turn them into software that feels clear, precise, and intuitive. You’ll design thoughtful, polished experiences for both research participants joining our studies and the clinical research staff running them. The role spans user research, interaction design, prototyping, testing, and delivery.

We value precision over decoration. Your goal is to understand complex problems deeply enough to design solutions that are simple to use, efficient to operate, precise in execution, and durable as the platform evolves.

Key Responsibilities

  • Own product design from conception through delivery, from feature optimizations to entirely new workflows.
  • Streamline complex clinical research and operational processes into intuitive product experiences.
  • Own user research end to end, including identifying and recruiting the right users.
  • Prototype, test, and iterate quickly.
  • Harmonize product design with IRB, regulatory, privacy, and compliance requirements.
  • Work closely with engineering to ensure designs hold up in production.

Required Qualifications

  • 5+ years of product design experience solving complex workflow problems, ideally in clinical research or healthcare settings.
  • Ability to take an ambiguous problem and drive it from first principles to a shipped solution.
  • Strong visual and UI fundamentals, with a bias toward simplicity and precision over decoration.
  • Experience conducting user research and usability testing.
  • Comfortable working closely with engineers and reasoning through edge cases and technical constraints.
  • AI-native in approach, with the judgment to curate, verify, and refine what AI produces.
  • Design with intention and know when less is more.
  • Thrive at startup speed without sacrificing craft.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in clinical research, healthcare, life sciences, or another complex operational domain.
  • Early-stage startup experience.
  • Interest in biology, medicine, or scientific research.
  • Comfortable writing code to build rich, functional prototypes.

Benefits & Compensation

  • Competitive salary and meaningful equity.
  • Comprehensive health, dental, and vision insurance
  • Flexible PTO policy
  • Professional development opportunities

How we work together

  • People first - We use AI and technology to serve people and improve human health, not the other way around.
  • Real change - We study how real biology unfolds in real people so the next generation of medicines works better for them.
  • Earn the right - We build from first principles and keep trying until we figure it out, because better futures don’t just happen.
