Job description

The Hardware Quality Assurance Engineer will support various projects located in Pasadena, CA as part of the NASA/JPL MASS subcontract.

The Hardware QA Engineer/Inspector provides end-to-end hands-on Quality Assurance oversight for JPL's spacecraft, instrument, and sensor products. They work with the global QA team supporting ongoing and future initiatives from spacecraft subassembly and subsystem integration and test, to launch site operations. They apply Quality Assurance principles and best practices for spacecraft and subsystems assembly and testing, including participation in build oversight, discrepancy resolution, and risk management.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provide effective and efficient solutions by consistently meeting key project objectives while adhering to quality standards.
  • Participate in the implementation of a Hardware Quality Assurance program specific to each project's needs.
  • Under general supervision, will team with others in verifying that Quality Assurance (QA) requirements are implemented wherever the flight and ground hardware is being built.
  • Monitor and track the status of hardware during procurement, manufacturing, assembly, integration & test, and through launch operations.
  • Review test procedures, audit tests, and assess inspection results for compliance to requirements.
  • Collaborate with all organizations that design, build, assemble, test, deliver, and operate robotic space missions.
  • Other duties as assigned.

  • This position requires US Citizenship or Permanent Resident status due to the sensitivity of customer related information.
  • Must have a bachelor's degree in a STEM related field.
  • Requires a minimum of 10 years recent and related work experience.
  • Possess knowledge in Aerospace Quality Assurance, along with one or more of the following areas: Quality Engineering, Configuration Management, Supplier Management Audits, Inspection techniques (nondestructive, electronics, mechanical), manufacturing processes, and/or hands-On hardware experience.
  • Experience reviewing Quality Assurance documentation, including verification of material certifications, test data, and full material traceability to purchase‑order requirements.
  • Demonstrated ability to be a member of strong, cohesive teams and to interact well with employees at all levels of an organization.

DESIRED:

  • General knowledge of systems thinking and the interdependencies of elements within a system as well as Process Variation, Deming's approach to Systems, and an understanding of Quality Management Systems (ISO 9001, AS9100, etc.) are plus.
  • Demonstrated capability in writing clear and detailed inspection reports, discrepancy documentation, and nonconformance records.
  • Participation in process‑improvement activities.
  • Understanding of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) and experience with inspections involving tight tolerance.
  • Experience assessing raw material acceptance criteria including grain direction, hardness, surface finish, coating/plating callouts, and material condition (e.g., annealed, solution‑treated).
  • Experience reviewing and validating special‑process certifications such as heat treat, nondestructive testing (NDT), welding, plating, or chemical processing.

WORK LOCATION:

  • This position is located onsite and offers a 9/80 schedule with every other Friday off; some travel may be required.
  • Schedules are subject to change based on the requirements of the position and/or customer needs.

BACKGROUND INVESTIGATIONS REQUIRED:

SALARY RANGE:

$75,000 - $200,000 salary dependent on education and experience.
