Job Summary
The Safety Manager is responsible for leading and managing the organization's environmental, health, and safety (EHS) programs across multiple facilities. This position provides strategic and operational leadership to reduce workplace injuries, ensure regulatory compliance, manage workers' compensation programs, and promote a strong safety culture throughout the organization.
The Safety Manager oversees safety personnel, manages safety systems and reporting, coordinates training and audits, administers workers' compensation and self-insurance programs, and works closely with leadership, employees, outside vendors, regulatory agencies, and third-party administrators.
Job Responsibilities
Safety Leadership
- Lead and support company-wide safety and health programs and initiatives.
- Promote a proactive safety culture through employee engagement, safety conversations, training, and recognition.
- Lead, train, mentor, and develop Safety Specialists and other assigned personnel.
- Conduct regular team meetings and individual meetings with staff.
- Provide safety guidance and support to employees, supervisors, and leadership.
- Build and maintain relationships with Plant Leadership.
- Establish expectations and goals with occupational health providers and periodically evaluate program effectiveness.
Safety Programs and Compliance
- Ensure compliance with applicable OSHA, state, federal, and local safety requirements.
- Develop, implement, review, and revise safety policies, procedures, and training programs.
- Conduct and coordinate safety audits, inspections, assessments, and corrective actions across company facilities.
- Maintain required OSHA records, postings, reports, and regulatory filings.
- Coordinate specialized safety programs, including emergency preparedness, forklift safety, arc flash assessments, and hearing conservation.
Incident Investigation and Reporting
- Review and approve incident investigations and corrective actions.
- Monitor safety performance, injury trends, and safety data.
- Maintain and manage safety information within Intelex and other reporting systems.
- Prepare safety dashboards, reports, and presentations for leadership and other stakeholders.
- Provide feedback on safety conversations and identify opportunities for continuous improvement.
Workers' Compensation and Claims Management
- Oversee workers' compensation claims and related programs.
- Work with the TPA, attorneys, medical providers, and other external partners.
- Participate in claims reviews, hearings, return-to-work efforts, and injured employee follow-up as necessary.
- Review and approve required claim documentation within established timeframes.
- Manage workers' compensation reporting, self-insurance requirements, renewals, and related financial information.
Training and Employee Engagement
- Develop, coordinate, and conduct safety training programs.
- Coordinate company-wide safety initiatives, toolbox talks, safety recognition programs, and awareness activities.
- Schedule and support SWST training, Safety Leadership Council meetings, Forklift Safety Days, and other safety events.
- Coordinate the JAH safety award and other employee recognition programs.
Administration and Professional Development
- Manage safety-related invoices, memberships, contracts, and vendor relationships.
- Coordinate required reports, renewals, assessments, and payments.
- Attend professional development opportunities, safety conferences, and industry events.
- Build and maintain relationships with occupational health providers and other safety partners.
- Perform other duties as assigned in support of the organization's safety and risk management objectives.
