Job description

Senior Power Electronics Engineer

Location: Niles, IL

Our client is seeking a Senior Power Electronics Engineer to play a pivotal role in expanding an in-house power electronics design capability within a sophisticated product engineering organization. This is an opportunity for an experienced LED driver designer to own meaningful circuit development work, influence future product platforms, and become a go-to technical resource for a broad range of power conversion challenges. The engineer will combine hands-on design with supplier collaboration, product improvement, troubleshooting, and technical mentorship, while working in an environment that offers substantial engineering ownership and exposure to varied technologies.

This Role Offers:

  • Broad technical exposure across power conversion architectures, dimming and control technologies, battery-powered products, and varied electronic form factors.
  • Potential long-term advancement into engineering leadership.
  • Flexible daily start and end times within a fully onsite work environment.
  • Competitive compensation, plus a target bonus.
  • Comprehensive benefits, including heavily employer-subsidized medical coverage, dental and vision options, retirement benefits, and paid time off.

Focus:

  • Personally design and develop LED driver circuitry for new products, taking concepts through detailed power electronics development, prototyping, testing, and refinement.
  • Engineer switch-mode power conversion solutions using architectures such as Buck, Boost, Flyback, and LLC, selecting approaches based on application-specific electrical and performance requirements.
  • Solve practical circuit challenges involving EMI, thermal behavior, component performance, dimming behavior, efficiency, reliability, and manufacturability.
  • Partner with external engineering and manufacturing resources when a product calls for co-development rather than a fully internal design.
  • Evaluate and improve existing power electronics designs to strengthen performance, reliability, functionality, and cost effectiveness.
  • Conduct bench-level troubleshooting and failure analysis using oscilloscopes, electronic loads, power measurement equipment, and other laboratory instrumentation.
  • Support qualification and validation activities for power supplies, control electronics, and related components against applicable performance and safety requirements.
  • Serve as a senior technical resource who shares design knowledge, guides less-experienced engineers, and helps strengthen the team's overall power electronics expertise.

Skill Set:

  • Demonstrated recent experience personally designing LED drivers at the circuit level. Experience limited to selecting, integrating, testing, or qualifying commercially available drivers is not sufficient for this position.
  • Approximately 3 to 5 or more years of strong hands-on LED driver or closely aligned power supply design experience, ideally including meaningful design work within the past five years.
  • Deep practical knowledge of switch-mode power electronics, including Buck, Boost, Flyback, and LLC architectures, with the ability to explain design tradeoffs and solutions encountered in real hardware.
  • Strong understanding of EMI mitigation, power supply reliability, qualification, circuit debugging, and root cause analysis.
  • Experience using circuit simulation tools such as PSpice or LTspice to support design decisions and troubleshooting.
  • Familiarity with lighting dimming or control technologies such as phase-cut, 0-10V, DALI, or DMX is valuable, but specialized experience with every protocol is not required.
  • Technical degree preferred, particularly in Electrical Engineering, although substantial current LED driver design expertise is more important than a specific degree path.
  • Self-directed senior-level engineer who can own technical work independently, communicate effectively with internal and external partners, and help develop the capabilities of other engineers.
