E470 Public Highway Authority is a dynamic public agency managing the 47-mile toll facility on the eastern perimeter of the Denver Metro area. E470 serves its customers as well as provides back-office tolling services for all other toll facilities in the State of Colorado. Description

The Senior Systems Engineer serves as a technical leader responsible for the design, implementation, optimization, and support of the organization's enterprise infrastructure platforms. This role ensures that server, storage, virtualization, cloud, identity, and related infrastructure systems are reliable, secure, scalable, and aligned with organizational objectives.

As the highest-level technical escalation point for infrastructure-related issues, the Senior Systems Engineer provides expert guidance, leads complex technology projects, and drives continuous improvement through automation, standardization, and modernization initiatives. This position works closely with Technology Operations, Security, Network, and business stakeholders to ensure infrastructure services support current and future business needs.

Responsibilities

Infrastructure Engineering & Operations

  • Design, implement, and maintain highly available, resilient, and scalable infrastructure solutions across on-premises, cloud, and hybrid environments.
  • Engineer and support enterprise server, storage, virtualization, backup, identity, and cloud platforms.
  • Work with Platform Engineering on the design, deployment, and support of hybrid cloud solutions leveraging platforms such as Microsoft Azure and AWS.
  • Serve as the highest-level technical escalation resource for complex infrastructure incidents, root cause analysis, and problem resolution.
  • Monitor and optimize infrastructure performance through capacity planning, systems tuning, and proactive maintenance.
  • Develop infrastructure standards, reference architectures, and operational best practices.
Automation & Modernization
  • Design and implement automation solutions using PowerShell, Bash, Python, Infrastructure as Code (IaC), and configuration management tools.
  • Drive infrastructure modernization initiatives, including cloud adoption, virtualization enhancements, platform upgrades, and service optimization.
  • Identify opportunities to reduce operational overhead through automation, standardization, and process improvement.
  • Evaluate emerging technologies and recommend solutions that improve reliability, security, operational efficiency, and scalability.
Disaster Recovery, Security & Compliance
  • Design, maintain, and regularly test disaster recovery and business continuity capabilities to meet business recovery objectives.
  • Partner with Information Security to support vulnerability remediation, identity management, patch management, privileged access controls, and compliance initiatives.
  • Implement security best practices across infrastructure platforms, including hardening standards, monitoring, and access controls.
  • Participate in risk assessments and provide technical recommendations to improve security posture and system resiliency.
Project Leadership & Collaboration
  • Lead complex infrastructure projects including system migrations, cloud implementations, data center improvements, and hardware refresh initiatives.
  • Collaborate with network, security, application, database, and business teams to ensure successful technology delivery.
  • Support operational readiness for new technology deployments by ensuring appropriate monitoring, backup, documentation, support procedures, and knowledge transfer activities are completed before production implementation.
  • Develop and maintain detailed technical documentation, architecture diagrams, standards, procedures, and knowledge base articles.
Technical Leadership & Mentoring
  • Serve as a technical mentor and subject matter expert for Systems Administrators and other Technology Operations staff.
  • Provide guidance on infrastructure architecture, troubleshooting methodologies, operational best practices, and technology strategy.
  • Promote knowledge sharing and continuous learning across technical teams.

Typical Qualifications

Experience

  • 12+ years of experience supporting and engineering enterprise infrastructure environments.
  • 5+ years of experience in a senior systems engineering, infrastructure engineering, or equivalent technical leadership role.
  • Proven experience designing and supporting highly available enterprise systems in hybrid cloud environments.
  • Experience leading complex infrastructure projects from planning through implementation and operational transition.
Technical Skills
  • Expert knowledge of Windows Server, Active Directory, Group Policy, Microsoft 365, and Entra ID.
  • Advanced experience with virtualization platforms including VMware and Hyper-V.
  • Strong knowledge of Microsoft Azure, AWS, and hybrid cloud architectures.
  • Expertise in enterprise storage technologies including SAN, NAS, backup, and recovery solutions.
  • Proficiency with PowerShell, Bash, Python, automation frameworks, and Infrastructure as Code concepts.
  • Experience with systems monitoring, performance management, logging, and observability platforms.
  • Strong understanding of networking fundamentals, security best practices, and infrastructure resiliency.
  • Expert knowledge of disaster recovery, business continuity, and high-availability architectures.
Preferred Certifications
  • Microsoft Certified: Azure Administrator Associate
  • Microsoft Certified: Azure Solutions Architect Expert
  • VMware Certified Professional (VCP)
  • AWS Solutions Architect Associate or Professional
  • ITIL Foundation or higher
  • Relevant infrastructure, cloud, or security certifications
