Job Summary
The Afterschool Activity Specialist is responsible for designing and delivering engaging, age-appropriate activities for students in grades K–5 in an elementary school setting, in alignment with DYCD, DOH, and DOE guidelines for afterschool programs. The specialist will foster creativity, academic growth, and social-emotional development through structured lessons and interactive experiences. Activities will culminate in projects, showcases, or performances to highlight participant achievement.
Duties
- Plan, prepare, and facilitate high-quality activities in assigned specialty area (Art, Dance, Music Production, Reading, Math, or STEM).
- Ensure all programming complies with DYCD, DOH, and DOE safety and program standards.
- Develop lesson plans that are age-appropriate, culturally relevant, and aligned with program goals.
- Maintain a safe, respectful, and inclusive learning environment.
- Engage students in hands-on learning that builds skills, teamwork, and self-confidence.
- Prepare students for culminating events such as showcases, exhibitions, or performances.
- Support homework help, enrichment activities, and program-wide events when needed.
- Maintain accurate attendance and activity records in accordance with DYCD reporting requirements.
- Collaborate with program staff to integrate specialty activities with broader program themes and objectives.
- Communicate regularly with supervisors regarding participant progress, behavior, and safety concerns.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent required; college coursework in education, youth development, or specialty area preferred.
- Prior experience working with children in an afterschool, camp, or school setting.
- Expertise in one or more specialty areas: Art, Dance, Music Production, Reading, Math, or STEM.
- Ability to design and implement lesson plans that meet DYCD program outcomes.
- Strong classroom and group management skills.
- Familiarity with DYCD, DOH, and DOE regulations for afterschool programs.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Commitment to youth development, equity, and creating a supportive learning environment.
- Must pass DOE PETS clearance and DOH fingerprinting prior to hire.
Job Type: Part-time
Pay: $20.00 - $25.00 per hour
Expected hours: 12 per week
