Description
This position will be responsible for supervising the activities of the Arts in Medicine program which is a local arts therapy program designed for therapeutic benefit of patients in active cancer treatment. The position will include the supervision of volunteers, monitoring the volunteer services, tthe recruitment of new volunteers and will emphasize the educational value of the program to the patients and the supervise the matting, framing, and appropriate plaques. Additionally, the incumbent will be responsible for determining the direction of the arts in Medicine Program including solicitations of new sources of funding including grants and philanthropic donations.
Regular attendance is required to perform the functions of this position.
Incumbent will maintain a customer-oriented awareness in acknowledging and responding to needs as they occur that customer satisfaction is met at all times.
Essential Position Functions & Duties
50% Arts in Medicine
- Provide supervision of the Arts in Medicine program which includes the creation and administration of art therapy programs for recovering cancer patients including sitting with patients during chemotherapy.
- Oversight of the Arts in Medicine volunteers including recruiting, training and monitoring of volunteer performance, recruiting new volunteers, maintaining a calendar of participation, and teaching new volunteers in appropriate methodology. Oversees the Community Art Project in which 40 pieces are selected from the community, framed and hung in hospital rooms for a year.
- Oversees a reception for parents and school art teachers/principals etc.
- Works with program artist(s) to provide artwork suitable for the program, to create color coded large scale paintings, finishing and framing of same. Recruit and supervise participating project artists, select appropriate paintings, and supervise the matting, framing, labeling and installation of the paintings.
20% Patient Education
- Develop painting projects for over 300 patients per year.
- Develop educational materials to allow patient appreciation of the art projects, supervise the distribution of material, and organize evaluation of these materials and the Arts in Medicine Program in general.
25% Public relations/grant acquisition
- Work with the FWCC Business Manager and/or LSU Foundation fundraising specialist to solicit grants from various funding agencies to maintain and expand the Arts in Medicine Program including initiation of the Program at other sites in the LSU Health Sciences Center system.
- Work with faculty to facilitate Arts in Medicine as a research tool for improvement of quality of life of patients undergoing various therapeutic maneuvers.
- Co-ordinate the FWCC Art Break award by working with the Art Break program staff and FWCC judging personnel to identify awardees, arrange for art to be framed and presented in a public setting and the subsequent awardee presentation program.
- Assist with any other Cancer Center sponsored programs and festivals which include art and/or art therapy endeavors.
5%Non-Essential Position Functions & Duties
Marginal duties
- Curate and catalog completed artwork on clinic walls. Catalog and track all loaned artwork.
- Attend monthly meetings with the Shreveport Regional Arts Council in order to promote the Arts in Medicine program and to collaborate with other local art programs.
- Any assigned by Director or FWCC Business Manager in addition to those stated above.
Qualifications
The applicant must meet the following:
- Bachelor's degree in Fine Arts, social sciences, education or related field and experience in arts education.
Preferred Qualifications
- Three to five years of experience in art production or management program Advanced degree in an arts and /or humanities field.
- Three to five years of experience in designing and implementing arts programs in a health care setting.
