Key Responsibilities
- Assisting with Construction and Maintenance: Groundhands support linemen in the installation, maintenance, and repair of overhead and underground power lines. This includes tasks such as digging holes, setting up poles, and preparing job sites. 2
- Operating Equipment: They may operate various machinery and tools, including chain saws, brush chippers, and light utility vehicles, to assist in construction and maintenance tasks. 2
- Site Preparation and Cleanup: Groundhands are responsible for preparing sites by clearing obstructions, maintaining cleanliness, and ensuring safety protocols are followed during operations.
- Material Handling: They assist in loading and unloading materials, stocking trucks with necessary supplies, and ensuring that linemen have the tools and equipment they need readily available.
- Safety Compliance: Groundhands must adhere to safety regulations and protocols, including the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and understanding safety rules related to electrical work.
Required Skills and Qualifications
- Physical Stamina: The role requires physical strength and the ability to lift heavy equipment regularly.
- Mechanical Skills: Knowledge of operating various machinery and tools is essential for performing daily tasks.
- Teamwork and Communication: Groundhands must work effectively as part of a team and communicate clearly with crew members.

Work Environment
Groundhands often work outdoors in various weather conditions and may be required to work irregular hours, including nights and weekends, depending on project needs. This entry-level position offers opportunities for advancement into more skilled roles, such as Apprentice Lineman or Journeyman Lineman, with on-the-job training provided.
