Heavy Equipment Operator – Blade Operator
PRIMARY PURPOSE:
Heavy Equipment/Blade Operator will aid in the construction of roads, dams, utilities, waterways and rock structures through the safe operation of construction machinery such as excavators, loaders, dozers, Motorgraders/Blades and skid steers. Machine operations include moving dirt, grading, trenching and backfill, clearing land, placing rock, and using machine attachments.
COMPENSATION:
$26.00 to $42.00 per hour with potential for overtime
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Operate motor grader/blade to create smooth, level surfaces for roads, building pads and other construction projects.
- Adjust blades, scarifiers, and attachments to achieve precise grading and slopes.
- Spread and mix materials such as gravel, dirt, and asphalt to achieve desired compaction and finish.
- Drive, operate and maneuver various types of heavy equipment to excavate, grade, and transport materials according to the Operations and Maintenance manuals and safety standards.
- Read and interpret grade stakes, boundary markers, utility locates, and basic plan drawings.
- Properly set up and utilize grade control devices to assist in reaching the defined grade tolerances.
- Use and understand all safety requirements of excavations and trenches.
- Accurately report to the supervisor information such as productions, load counts, hours worked, service meter readings, and fluid levels.
- Remain actively aware of surroundings near the equipment to maintain safe operation and distances from potential hazards such as utility lines, other equipment, other workers, or falling objects.
- Coordinate machine functions with crew members in response to hand and audio signals.
- Maintain work area, jobsite, vehicles and equipment in a neat, clean and organized manner.
- Inspect machines daily prior to operation for safety issues, fluid levels and wear and record results on daily inspection forms.
- Perform general maintenance of machinery and equipment including the cleaning of cab, windows, tracks and mirrors.
- Fuel and grease assigned equipment in accordance with the O&M manuals in the absence of the preventive maintenance mechanic.
- Perform labor work when necessary including shoveling, raking and trenching.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Compliance with all company policies and procedures as well as the general attendance policies.
- Compliance with all safety policies and procedures.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Proven skill and experience operating at least one or more pieces of equipment such as Front-end Loader, Bulldozer, Haul Truck, Skid-steer, or Excavator.
- Ability to communicate and take direction from supervisors regarding productions, safety, and best management practices.
- Ability to communicate and understand specific safety and skills training.
- Ability to travel out of town for work (if required).
- Highly proficient in checking grade, reading stakes, and the ability to successfully perform necessary related math functions.
- Strong working knowledge of safe equipment operation, trenching and excavation practices.
- Willing to work a flexible schedule
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
- Required High School diploma or GED.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
- Operators are subject to continuous bouncing, shaking and equipment vibration throughout the course of their shift. Work functions require the ability to sit, stand, and ride in vehicles for long periods of time, as well as the physical ability and mobility to access equipment, modify attachments, and control cabin.
- Ability to push/pull equipment parts or materials up to 50 lbs.
- Ability to lift/carry equipment parts or materials up to 50 lbs.
- Ability to climb into and out of equipment
- Ability to reach above head and 6-inches with fine gross motor skill.
- Ability to shovel or rake while performing daily duties.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
- Outside work exposed to variant weather conditions (hot, cold, rain, snow) and muddy ground condition as well as exposure to dusty environments.
