Position Summary
Brief Description of PSU/School/Dept
Facilities and Property Management (FPM) comprises approximately 80 full time and 60 student employees who work together to maintain over 5 million square feet in downtown Portland, and this team is a key element in the department. FPM is pleased to serve all members of the PSU community, and takes a tremendous amount of pride in providing a superior and vibrant learning environment.
FPM is recognized as an exceptionally talented team built from a diverse group of individuals who are passionate about providing the highest levels of quality craftsmanship, customer service and teamwork through sustainable practices and who take pride in supporting the mission of the University. All facilities maintenance personnel are considered essential personnel and may be required to respond to campus emergencies, including inclement weather.
Position Summary
Portland State University’s Facilities and Property Management department is hiring a Mechanical Systems Maintenance Technician. The Mechanical Systems Maintenance Technician provides journey-level preventative and reactive maintenance support for various types of commercial building filters, strainers, cooling towers, valves, fans, and other HVAC equipment. With a small team of dedicated professionals, this position responds to work orders for routine and preventative maintenance requests, communicates operational instructions, and coordinates the work of external providers. The Technician makes decisions using standardized guidelines and reports to the Mechanical Systems Manager.
Successful candidates will demonstrate effective communication and customer service skills, as well as a sense of initiative. They will have the ability to work in the presence of the public while maintaining a professional demeanor keeping a safe, orderly and clean worksite. They will be collaborative, results-oriented, and enjoy working with a small group in a fast-paced environment.
This is a permanent full-time position within an innovative team-oriented environment located in downtown Portland, and includes a comprehensive benefits package with paid time off including paid sick time, paid holidays and paid vacation days, 95% employer-funded premium healthcare, 100% employer-funded retirement plans, and 70% off of tuition for the employee, dependent children, and your spouse or domestic partner. This position is represented by SEIU 89. Minimum Qualifications from Classification
- Four years of experience maintaining, repairing, and fabricating parts for machinery, tools, and equipment such as automobiles, trucks, hydraulic systems, lift trucks, etc.; OR
- Completion of an approved Mechanical Maintenance Apprenticeship Program.
Additional Minimum Qualifications for this Position
- Experience in maintaining and repairing HVAC equipment, machinery, and physical plant operating systems
- Experience safely using manual and power tools
- Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with the diverse campus community and staff in the performance of work
- Successful completion of a background check
- State-issued driver’s license
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience performing related work in an institutional or higher education environment
- Certificate in Facilities Maintenance Technology

Total Compensation Range & Benefits Statement
The starting hourly salary rate for this position is between $23.18 and $24.27 plus a monthly recruitment and retention bonus equal to 10% of the base salary which equates to $25.50 to $26.70 per hour.
The starting salary will be dependent upon the knowledge, experience, skills and abilities of the chosen candidate, the budget of the hiring department, and approval from HR.
Portland State has an excellent benefits package including 95% employer-paid health insurance premiums (employees and eligible dependents) and significantly reduced tuition rates for employees and eligible dependents at any of the Oregon Public Universities. After completing six full months employees are eligible to the employer-paid pension program in addition to two voluntary retirement programs.
