Position Overview
Tonix Pharmaceuticals is seeking a highly experienced and innovative histotechnologist to provide a full spectrum of histology and pathology techniques at our Research and Development Center in support of a growing portfolio of therapeutics in infectious diseases, immunology, oncology, and central nervous system disease. This position will play a key role in developing in-house capabilities in routine histology and molecular pathology techniques using standard and specialized microscopy techniques and will advise
on feasibility and applicability of these techniques for ongoing and future research protocols. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience in routine and specialized molecular histologic techniques, gross necropsy and sample preparation, and animal research under high biocontainment conditions.
Key Responsibilities
- Gross Necropsy and Tissue Collection
- Assist with or independently perform gross necropsies on various laboratory animal species in ABSL-2 and ABSL-3 conditions
- Collect fresh and fixed tissues for histologic, molecular, or electron microscopy techniques
Tissue Processing and Embedding, Microtomy, Slide Preparation
- Process tissue samples using automated or manual methods
- Embed tissues in paraffin blocks for sectioning
- Section tissues at appropriate thicknesses using microtome or cryostat
- Mount sections on glass slides or other media as appropriate for follow-on analytical technique
Staining Techniques
- Perform hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) staining, as well as routine histochemical stains on prepared slides
- Develop and perform Immunohistochemistry (IHC) staining using standard chromogen- or fluorescent-labeled antibodies to detect specific antigens within tissue sections
- Develop and perform In Situ Hybridization (ISH), including fluorescence ISH (FISH) to localize nucleic acid sequences within tissue sections
- Performs digital whole slide image scanning and archiving
Quality Control and Documentation
- Report pathology data and enter select pathology findings in electronic data capturing systems
- Maintain accurate records of procedures and results
- Optimize and validate staining protocols
- Prepare control slides and ensure analytical result integrity
- Perform operator level equipment preventive maintenance and calibration on assigned equipment
Collaboration and Training
- Work closely with collaborators, investigators, technicians, and pathologists to maximize data diagnostic value and accuracy of pathology techniques
- Provide training and technical guidance for investigators and staff in appropriate necropsy and histological techniques
Qualifications
- Associate or bachelor’s degree in histotechnology or related field
- ASCP certification (HT or HTL) preferred
- Minimum 6 years’ experience in a high-throughput histology lab, with minimum 3 years’ experience with immunohistochemistry and in situ hybridization; demonstrated proficiency in microtomy, histochemical staining, and molecular techniques
- Experience in supporting GLP and non-GLP preclinical research and animal model development in pharmaceutical industry or government research laboratories
- Experience in maintaining written and electronic laboratory records
- Strong communication and organizational skills, ability to work independently and as an integral part of a research team

Compensation & Benefits
Annualized base salary ranges from $70,000 to $120,000 plus target incentive; actual salaries will vary and may be above or below this range commensurate with several factors including experience, education, training, location, and merit.
