The Women's Center in Waukesha, WI is looking to hire a full-time Weekdays 2rd shift Shelter Advocate to provide advocacy and support to individuals and families impacted by domestic abuse, sexual assault/abuse and Human Trafficking. This advocacy position earns a competitive wage of $18.54/hour $30.850.00/annually. Founded in 1977, our mission is to provide safety, shelter, and support to empower all impacted by domestic abuse, sexual violence, child abuse, and trafficking. We offer 24-Hour Hotline support, an emergency shelter, transitional living, one on one support, support groups, employment and life skills, rape crisis response, and community education. A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A Shelter Advocate
In this advocacy position, no two days are alike! Both in the shelter and on the 24-Hour Hotline you engage in active listening to ensure all survivors have a knowledgeable, trauma-informed, and empathetic person to support them in accessing resources and services. These include crisis intervention, safety planning, emotional support, advocacy, and providing appropriate referrals. You help victims receive immediate support by working with local hospitals and Law Enforcement. In the shelter, you ensure the client's basic needs are met by stocking fun and nutritious food and other necessary items, keeping the group spaces clean, and toys and self-care items readily available. Some days you may be putting away donations while other days you might be engaged in a lively game of charades with children residing in the shelter.
