The Opportunity
WSDOT is currently seeking a Transportation Technician 3 (TT3) to support the survey activities in the Olympic Region (OR) and the Right of Way Plans Office both in field mapping, staking and survey data processing. The Survey Technician provides quality survey data, which is required as a first step to develop engineering and eventually construction plans for WSDOT. The survey data provided improves the safety, quality, and capacity of Washington State’s Transportation system by providing data for contract plans development. This position will be expected to exercise initiative and judgement in carrying out assignments according to established policies, procedures, and standards.

What to Expect
Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Survey Technician will:
  • Serve as a survey party crew member, setting horizontal and vertical control, compiling notes for surveying activities.
  • Operate Total Station, Data Collector, Global Positioning System (GPS), Real Time Kinematic (RTK), Levels and other survey instruments.
  • Stake Right of Way, locate monuments and complete construction staking.
  • Download and upload data; edit daily files and modify them; maintain files; and collaborate with team lead in reviewing data to create quality survey deliverables.
  • Perform other duties in support of survey operations, including but not limited to reproducing, organizing, and maintaining engineering documents and assisting with archiving of engineering documents.

Survey work is performed outdoors in inclement weather and requires ability to traverse steep and uneven terrain.

Qualifications
This position has been approved for in-training. The hiring manager is looking to hire at the Transportation Technician 3 (TT3) level; however the in-training plan will allow candidates to be considered as a Transportation Technician 2 (TT2) or Transportation Technician 1 (TT1) levels.

To be considered for this opportunity one of the following competencies are required:
  • Applied Technical Engineering Skills: Ability to perform basic technical engineering tasks under guidance, such as data collection, field inspections, material testing, or plan review—comparable to work performed by a Transportation Technician 2 or similar role.
OR
  • Engineering Fundamentals Knowledge: Demonstrated understanding of engineering principles through formal education or equivalent experience in one or more of the following areas: civil, structural, geotechnical, traffic, or transportation engineering; soil mechanics; or other closely related disciplines.
OR
  • Professional Credential Recognition: Possession of a recognized professional credential such as Certification as an Engineer-in-Training (EIT), demonstrating foundational knowledge in engineering disciplines OR a Land Surveyor’s license, reflecting competency in surveying practices and legal standards.

In addition to the above competencies, the following are also required:
  • Ability to work safely outdoors in inclement weather, with potential exposure to steep or uneven terrain and air quality hazards (e.g., exhaust fumes).
  • Ability to work overtime, including evenings, nights and weekends as needed.

It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:
  • Two-year college degree in Civil Engineering or Surveying
  • Land Surveyor in Training certification or Professional Land Surveyor license.

  • This position offers flexible/hybrid remote work options.
  • This position has been approved for in-training. The hiring manager is looking to hire at the Transportation Technician 3 level; however, the in-training plan will allow candidates to be considered as a Transportation Technician 2 or Transportation Technician 1 levels. The base salaries for each level are:
  • Transportation Technician 1: $47,100 – $63,252
  • Transportation Technician 2: $55,836 – $75,108
  • Transportation Technician 3: $64,776 – $87,048
  • This position is required to travel overnight on occasion.
  • In addition to base salary, employees may be entitled to other forms of compensation depending on the type, duties, or location of the position. For union-represented positions, more information on other forms of compensation can be found in the applicable Collective Bargaining Agreements. Information on other compensation types for non-represented positions can be found in Chapter 357-28of the Washington Administrative Code.
