Job description

Salary: Competitive depending on experience

Who We Are

Countersight is a specialist cybersecurity company delivering capability development and consulting services to clients within government and across the private sector. We are independent, Australian, and Canberra-based, with the flexibility to operate Australia-wide.

Our team of software engineers works on interesting problems across the entire technology stack, from embedded systems to web and mobile applications, finding creative ways to build and deliver the software solutions our clients need.

The systems that run our software matter as much as the software itself. We are looking for someone to help us build and operate them.

The Role

Location: Canberra (Australian-based remote and hybrid arrangements available)

Hours: Full-time

Salary: Competitive based on experience

Clearance: NV1 or the willingness/ability to obtain is desirable

Countersight has several software projects currently in development. We are expanding our software engineering team in concert with customer growth and are looking for a Software Engineer with skills in frontend, backend development and solving complex problems.

We are looking for talented entry to mid-level engineers who are keen to share knowledge while continuing to develop their skills alongside the team. The role is for an engineer who cares about the entire life-cycle of the software they write. Working as part of a development team, you will build and maintain software our customers rely on. The scope of the position will depend on the experience you bring.

Curiosity and a genuine interest of technology and craft are key to this role. We care how you think through a problem and how you communicate your work. There is potential for the right applicant to take on real responsibility in the early stages of this role with appropriate support. We do not expect you to arrive knowing everything, but we do expect you to want to learn it.

What You’ll Do

  • Develop and maintain bespoke software using modern frontend and backend technologies.
  • Design and develop software with strong emphasis on security-by-design, maintainability, and scalability.
  • Perform root cause analysis on failures across the stack, from application code to kernel to network to hardware, and fixing those problems.
  • Work with AI and develop AI-focused tooling.
  • Integrate and deploy software across diverse enterprise environments, troubleshoot issues, and support clients through delivery.
  • Collaborate across team disciplines to prototype and develop software.
  • Write clean, maintainable and well-documented code that follows industry best practices and coding standards.
  • Participate in code reviews, contribute to engineering best practices, and maintain high software quality.
  • Document as you go, and document how systems operate, so that knowledge lives in version control and can be built upon.
  • Learn continuously, pick up new tools, platforms, and domains quickly, and share what you find with the team.

Technical Exposure

Depending on experience, we are looking for familiarity in the following areas:

  • Scripting and programming in at least one backend language and one frontend language
  • Git version control, and working in a team through pull requests
  • CI/CD systems (for example GitLab CI, GitHub Actions, Jenkins, Buildkite)
  • Databases (for example PostgreSQL, SQLite, MongoDB)

Additionally, knowledge in the following areas would be beneficial:

  • Networking fundamentals: IP addressing, DNS, TLS, OSI Model
  • Wireless technologies
  • Security fundamentals
  • Linux fundamentals
  • Embedded technologies or development

About You

We’re looking for someone who is:

  • comfortable being given wide latitude and figuring things out
  • willing to say "I don't know, but I'll go and find out"
  • not afraid to ask for help when needed
  • able to explain technical concepts clearly to people who do not share your context
  • interested in doing things properly, and pragmatic about when properly has to wait

Why Work For Countersight

As a small company, we prioritise supporting our team and fostering a positive, flexible, and enjoyable work culture. Collaboration, continuous learning and the latitude to experiment are the heart of our approach. For a software engineer, that means the opportunity to work on interesting products with real users, access to experienced mentors who are invested in your success, and a fun culture that is open to experimentation and finding the best solution to a given problem.

Our main office is located a short walk from Braddon and some of Canberra's most popular cafes, restaurants, breweries and coffee roasters, and is also convenient for public transport, including light rail.

Our work and client focus allows us to directly contribute to the security and success of our community, and we believe that security is the key ingredient in opening up the promise of technology.

We thrive on deep technical challenges and relish the opportunity to extend our knowledge and explore the limits of the technologies we work with.

We enjoy what we do, and we think you will too.

Eligibility

To be eligible to apply for this position, you must meet the following criteria:

  • Be an Australian citizen
  • Satisfy pre-employment screening, including police history checks
  • Desirable: Hold a current NV1 clearance
