Software Engineer (Junior to Mid-Level) - Monitoring & Observability (Contract)

A 4-month contract role supporting monitoring and project, with one of our clients. The role can be done from Canberra, ACT or Melbourne, VIC.
About the role
You'll join a delivery team building and running Elastic Stack monitoring for a federal agency's infrastructure, databases, applications and cloud services.
Working under the direction of senior engineers and architects, you'll configure integrations, build Kibana dashboards and alerts, and help the team investigate incidents using observability data. It's a hands-on role suited to an early-career engineer who wants practical experience on a government program.
Key responsibilities
- Configure and maintain monitoring for servers, operating systems, containers, databases and cloud resources
- Deploy and support Elastic Stack components: Elasticsearch, Kibana, Logstash, Beats and Elastic Agent
- Set up integrations to collect logs, metrics, traces and events from client systems
- Build and refine Kibana dashboards, visualisations and alert rules
- Help configure application performance monitoring (APM) and telemetry collection
- Write scripts (Python, PowerShell or similar) to automate deployment and configuration tasks
- Support troubleshooting and root cause analysis during incidents
- Document configurations, standards and operating procedures for handover to the client team
- Take part in sprint ceremonies, peer reviews and knowledge-sharing sessions
Essential skills and experience
- Exposure to the Elastic Stack or a similar observability platform, or a demonstrated ability to pick it up quickly
- Scripting or automation experience in Python, PowerShell, JavaScript or similar
- Working knowledge of Linux and/or Windows, networking basics, virtual machines and containers
- Familiarity with at least one relational or NoSQL database and basic performance concepts
- Methodical approach to investigating technical issues
- Clear written and verbal communication, including documentation
- Ability to work well with engineers, DBAs, platform teams and client stakeholders
- Awareness of security and compliance expectations in government environments
Desirable experience
- Elastic certification or hands-on Elastic Observability work
- SQL Server, PostgreSQL, Oracle, MySQL or MongoDB
- Azure, AWS or Google Cloud
- Docker and Kubernetes
- Git, CI/CD pipelines, and Terraform or Ansible
- Other monitoring tools such as Prometheus, Grafana, Dynatrace, Splunk or AppDynamics
- Previous work on Australian Government or other regulated projects
