Editorial Assistant, Flatiron Books

Flatiron Books is seeking an Editorial Assistant that will assist the SVP, Publisher and an Editor at Large, publishing a broad range of fiction from literary to young adult as well as some narrative nonfiction and memoir with additional emphasis though not exclusive focus on authors of color. Main responsibilities will be to manage administrative tasks for the editors along with some editorial work providing a significant opportunity for growth.

What you'll primarily do:

  • Administrative support including: handle calls and messages, help maintain publishing schedule, process expenses, ship packages, read and assess manuscripts, act as liaison with other departments on behalf of editors, help locate contact information, prepare excel spreadsheets, make travel arrangements, mailings etc.
  • Paperwork and data entry: prepare and traffic forms related to all parts of the publishing process including metadata input, tip sheets, contract requests, check requests, author questionnaires, pricing requests, etc.
  • Maintain professional and responsive communication with authors and agents and other internal departments.
  • Log, read, and evaluate submissions.
  • Editorial reading, proofreading, copyediting

What you'll bring:

  • Ability to prioritize, respond to shifting and fast-paced environment, and work independently.
  • Attention to detail and excellent follow through on tasks.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office programs.
  • Demonstrated interest in a broad range of fiction.

Experience/Education:

  • Entry level role. Previous book publishing or bookselling experience/internships a plus but not required.
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience.
