Assistant Technical Director

School of Performing Arts:

The School of Performing Arts is part of the College of Arts and Humanities and comprises the Music and Theatre programs with more than 100 faculty and staff serving more than 1,000 undergraduate and graduate students earning degrees in the performing arts as well as thousands of students from other majors across the university taking music, theatre and dance classes. It produces outstanding practitioners, educators, and scholars in Music and Theatre while fostering a strong relationship between the community and the artists.

The Opportunity:

At the direction of the Technical Director, the Assistant Technical Director will lead daily operations of the scene shop, including teaching lab classes and supervising student crews and over-hire labor. This role supports the full life cycle of scenic production—building, installing, and striking scenery for departmental productions. This is a hands-on position that combines technical expertise with mentorship and instructional responsibilities.

Responsibilities:

• Lead the scene shop student staff in building, installing, and striking scenery for departmental productions. Work on building productions when students are not available.

• Serve as the Scene Shop Manager.

• Oversee maintenance of shop and keep standard supplies stocked.

• Supervise student crews and over hire labor assigned to build the shows.

• Assist Technical Director with development of special and complex mechanical theatrical effects. preparing lesson plans if requested, and executing projects assigned by the Technical Director.

• Attend spacing and technical rehearsals for theatre productions throughout the year.

• Attend Dr. Phillips Center rehearsals.

• Execute welding, painting and other areas of expertise.

• Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor's or Master's Degree and 0+ years of relevant experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience pursuant to Fla. Stat. 112.219. Click here for more information

Preferred Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree in a related field with 2 to 5 years of relevant professional experience in technical theatre or production.

• Advanced proficiency in theatrical carpentry, including set construction and stage rigging.

• Working knowledge of scenic painting techniques and basic welding skills.

• At least one year of teaching experience at the secondary or post-secondary level, preferably in a theatre or performing arts program.

• Familiarity with OSHA safety standards and best practices for maintaining a safe working environment in theatrical shops and performance spaces.

The anticipated salary range for this position is $20.29- $29.42. The final salary will be determined based on the candidate's qualifications, experience, and internal equity considerations.
