Job Description Summary
The Director of Marketing & Business Development plays a critical leadership role in advancing marketing, customer experience, and revenue-generating initiatives across Penn’s Division of Business Services. Reporting to the Associate Vice President for Business Services, this position provides strategic oversight of Penn’s trademark licensing program—guiding brand policy, product development, vendor relationships, and the enforcement of University brand standards. The Director also leads Campus Express@Penn, Penn’s centralized student services platform, overseeing its continuous development to enhance the student experience. Additionally, the Director drives marketing and communications efforts that support over 20 departments, and leads engagement strategies for the Penn Bookstore and other key campus-facing programs.
Job Description
Trademark Licensing & Brand Management
- Lead all aspects of Penn’s trademark licensing program, including brand strategy, licensee oversight, product development, revenue generation, and compliance.
- Serve as the contract administrator and relationship manager for Penn’s licensing agency.
- Collaborate with the Office of the Secretary, University Communications, Office of General Counsel, and Penn Center for Innovation to interpret and shape policies related to trademark use on merchandise.
- Ensure consistent enforcement of brand standards across licensed products and promotional use of Penn’s identity.
Campus Express@Penn Leadership
- Lead the strategy, development, and ongoing management of Campus Express@Penn, a web-based hub for essential student services.
- Ensure coordination with key campus service providers and maintain a user-friendly, accessible platform aligned with student needs.
Marketing & Business Development
- Develop and execute marketing strategies for over 20 departments and programs within the Division.
- Create integrated campaigns across digital and print channels; manage messaging, brand positioning, and event marketing.
- Act as a liaison between Business Services and key campus partners and external vendors.
Penn Bookstore Engagement
- Support promotional activities and communications for the Penn Bookstore, including event marketing, course materials campaigns, faculty outreach, and social media.
- Respond to constituent inquiries and help develop and distribute surveys; use feedback to inform business planning.
Customer Experience & Engagement
- Lead divisional customer experience initiatives, including coordination of presence at campus-wide events.
- Design and analyze surveys, manage customer feedback systems, and lead improvement efforts based on data insights.
Cross-Divisional Collaboration
- Partner with the Directors of Communications & External Relations and Communications & Special Projects to develop aligned messaging, customer engagement strategies, and special initiatives.
- Provide project leadership on efforts that improve operational efficiency, brand engagement, and service delivery.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree required; Master’s degree preferred.
- 5-7 years of experience in marketing, communications, licensing, or related fields is required; 7-10 years preferred.
- Demonstrated expertise in trademark licensing, brand management, and brand standards enforcement; experience with collegiate licensing strongly preferred.
- Strong background in multi-channel marketing, audience segmentation, content strategy, and creative development.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills and experience working with senior-level stakeholders.
- Proficiency in contract administration and vendor management.
- Skilled in tools such as Qualtrics, Adobe Creative Suite, Microsoft O365, and web-based platforms.
- Experience in higher education or student services strongly preferred.
- Proven project management, survey development, and event planning capabilities.
